Prince fans were not about to let Justin Timberlake get away with his tribute to the late icon without comment…and most of it continues to be negative.

As previously reported, JT performed Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U” with a giant projection of the artist on a large billowing sheet behind the stage. (Watch above.) This method was apparently chosen after Sheila E shut down his original plan to perform with a Prince hologram.

In a 1998 interview with Guitar World magazine, Prince was asked directly about the use of digital editing to “create a situation where you could jam with any artist from the past.” He was unequivocally against it.

“That’s the most demonic thing imaginable,” he said. “Everything is as it is, and it should be. If I was meant to jam with Duke Ellington, we would have lived in the same age. That whole virtual reality thing … it really is demonic. And I am not a demon. Also, what they did with that Beatles song (Free As A Bird), manipulating John Lennon’s voice to have him singing from across the grave … that’ll never happen to me. To prevent that kind of thing from happening is another reason why I want artistic control.”

Many fans thought JT’s projection of Prince on the sheet was too close to the hologram concept that Prince clearly hated and took to social media with their disapproval.

Jemele Hill, formerly of ESPN and now senior correspondent at The Undefeated, tweeted a GIF of Prince expressing befuddlement.

Sinbad also took to social media with more details about Prince’s original beef with JT, which started with JT’s 2006 release of “Sexy Back.”

At the time, Prince joked that sexy never left. Timberlake responded with a verse in “Give It To Me” in which he said to Prince, “Don’t hate on me just because you didn’t come up with it.” Later, Timberlake mocked Prince’s hight by lowering the mic stand to accept an award on his behalf at the Golden Globes.

Watch Sinbad detail these events in the video below.

It sickens me to know that Prince didn’t leave a Will. I’m not sure if he thought he would live forever or what, but a man with such a great mind, I’m referring to his musical talents, would not be more careful in his estate planning. He understood the business and knew the vultures would be waiting to pick at his caucus before his body was cold. He didn’t want his music in the hands of the greedy and no talent execs when he was alive. It disappoints me to know, he didn’t surround himself with people smarter than him who would have insisted on him having Will.
No one person knows it all, you have to surround yourself with people who know things you don’t. There is a saying that goes something like, if you’re the smartest one in your circle or group, you need to find a better/smarter group.
I can’t comment on JT’s performance, I didn’t see it, nor do I care to.

I still say all of this “much to do about nothing” is all about some people still mad about the Janet/JT incident. We are going to get to a point where people do not care about people being upset. People just want to moan about everything just to hear themselves on social media and think they are important.

  3. Justin Timberlake could never feel Princes shoes. He mocked Prince for being short. Justin your not tall at all and your a wannabe black singer who cant quite get it. I don’t even know why you are famous cause your show sucked.

  4. JT performance was excellent. The prince tribute was in fine taste. That Incident that happen at the last super bowl was Janet fault she should have had a bra on she plan it and it failed.
If he didn’t do the tribute to prince y’all negros would have still complained.
Damn if you do and damn if you don’t!!!
Negros get a life and yes I’m black.
Sinbad the worst dress man in America with those Aladdin clothes that he wears needs the fashion police on him and give him life in prison

JT is, and has always been a “wannabe”. He would never have been fit to perform on the same stage with Prince when he wasn’t alive, and I don’t think most people appreciate him feigning performing on the same stage now that this Legend is gone. Prince’s so-called “family” don’t have me fooled either. Despite what the brother had said, I firmly believe that there was a plan for a hologram, and this was he compromise following the push-back. For them, it’s all about the money. They don’t care one bit about what Price would and would not have wanted, hence the reason that they had his house open to the public as quickly as they did. I firmly believe that Prince had a will SOMEWHERE!

Well, if Prince did not want this kind of thing done even by his family, He should have had a WILL which he did not have and had it nailed in stone. Like it or not, people are going to make money off of Prince regardless if it is his family or record execs, etc.

These days and times make me sick and so not optimistic about the future…Does anyone care about things that are important anymore? In the scheme of life, some things are extremely low on the totem pole…this is one of those things

  7. Prince and Sinbad were friends. white people always trying bite off great entertainers. Prince owns Minneapolis that boy better pay homage . Sinbad is funky and funny as h-ll.
