There has been an international outrage over Liam Mango, the five-year-old model, who wore a “Coolest Monkey In The Jungle” hoodie for an H&M advertisement. Protests have occurred in South Africa, forcing 17 stories to temporarily close. Terry Mango, the boy’s mother, briefly spoke out on social media, claiming “it wasn’t a big deal.” Now, she and the boy’s father did their first interview with  Good Morning Britain.

Terry, who lives in Sweden, explained she didn’t see a racism in the hoodie, “I wouldn’t see such a connection to anything other than my son modelling a shirt. Until the controversy now, with the whole furor that is going on, then you kind of look back and wonder if you had noticed it, what would be our initial, or my initial, response to it.”

Terry also said that she didn’t think it was an overreaction, “It is not an overreaction when it comes to racism, everyone should act differently based on their opinions of what racism is.” Terry said she has been called a monkey and experienced racism, but she still did not see the connection. In addition, the controversy has affected the family with threats forcing them move out of their home. Watch the interview below:

Terry Mango’s interview is much more measured than her original posts on social media. See below:

The controversy made G-Eazy and The Weeknd, who have cut ties with the brand, The Cut reported.

  1. Here is the things we as blacks have to still deal with. When blacks accept this kind of nonsense, we all get put in the same boat (that reason alone is the reason why a black person can speak out on this shirt. Go to a store and see a black person stealing, see how you will get treated and you are educated with money in your pocket but you will reap what the other black person did. Be a success on your job as a black person. Guess what, they will hire another black person. see my point.). See, If H and M was not challenged on this, then they would give the next black person the same thing and think it is ok since ONE black family think it is ok and then this manifest into something else.

    • Another example. If President Obama and Michelle would have behave like Trump, do you think America will be open to elect another black person (we still boardline to see if that will happen will again); but regardless to how Trump is behaving, do you think that is going to stop America from voting another white man in office? NO. We get put in the same boat.

I agree with Guest1. How are you unable to view the shirt as racist, but at the same time be offended when you yourself were called a monkey? Makes no sense to me, but hey, their kid, their call.

  5. $$$$$$$$$$$$ will make some people be in denial. Remember some blacks thought their slave masters was good to them; some blacks thought MLK was a trouble maker when he was alive, etc. Nothing new.

Terry said she has been called a monkey and experienced racism, but she still did not see the connection. WTF?

This woman is clearly blinded by the $s, which has rendered all her common sense null and void. She clearly admits that she’s experienced racism, in addition to being called a monkey, but didn’t make the connection when the store also called her son a monkey by giving him his own costume. But hey, at least he’s cool. SMH
