The New England Patriots were running a Twitter operation designed to thank fans for helping them become the first NFL team to reach 1 million followers, only one of its thank you tweets accidentally included the word “n**ger.”

What had happened was…the team tweeted many followers with pictures of customized digital jerseys featuring their Twitter handle on the back. Apparently, the team didn’t think to monitor the names coming in, one of which was “@IHATEN**GERS.”

Of course the tweet has since been deleted, but not before folks took screenshots and fans lashed out.

The team later tweeted, “We apologize for the regrettable tweet that went out from our account. Our filtering system failed & we will be more vigilant in the future.”
