Another case of shackling female prisoners has sparked outrage. A pregnant Black woman was handcuffed and targeted with racist slurs during a “savage beating” in FloridaBenjamin Crump, a national civil rights attorney, said Monday.

Kirenda Welch, 36, was arrested June 29 on a suspended license charge and booked into Duval County Jail in Jacksonville. Catherine Thompson, a corrections officer, put four-point restraints on Welch’s wrists and ankles. Thompson then punched her in the face and stomach and hurled racist slurs including “Kunta Kinte” at Welch, investigators said.

Thompson was fired and arrested Thursday (July 5), News 4 Jax reported.

Other officers watched the brutality, including when Thompson pulled out pepper spray, Welch said.

The beating should be investigated as a hate crime by the State Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Department of Justice, Crump, who has represented Stephon Clark and Trayvon Martin‘s families, said at a a press conference. The incident highlighted the “illegal abuse of excessive force,” he said.

Surveillance footage will be released at some point pending the investigation, according to Jacksonville attorney Randy Reep. An open records lawsuits is expected to be filed by Crump, who also urged for training reforms for officers in Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Thompson, who is still in a probationary period with the sheriff’s office, has been charged with misdemeanor battery and a misconduct felony.

The beating spotlights the inhumane and unsafe practice of shackling pregnant inmates that seems to target pregnant Black women. Two North Carolina female inmates, who were not publicly identified, were also shackled during their labor in January, according to Monica Simpson, executive director of reproductive rights organization SisterSong.

Another coward with a gun, taser and the use of shackles. I’ll give her two days before she’s crying about death threats. As usual, per the usual suspects, they’ll seek protection from their fellow racist brethren.

What did I miss? She was arrested for driving on a suspended license. What – a misdemeanor? Why did they put her in jail attire and four point restraints? Were they trying to humiliate her, teach her a lesson? That’s excessive. They should get sued for that tom foolery alone. You have domestic abuse cases where the perpetrator is treated better and bonded out in hours. That 21 year old correction officer thought she was trying to break a runaway slave. She shouldn’t just go to jail for that, but get extra time for being a coward. Beating a pregnant shackled woman is cowardly and thuggish behavior. I’m a big fan of the purge movies. Heck pretty soon, it’s going to come down to a survival of the fitness. Some of this stuff is outrageous.

I am a middle aged white father of a beautifull daughter and granddaughter, both who are black. I have seen seen the blindness of racism here in the Hamptons, where we all live. I try my best not to cry out when i see the results of our American racism being promoted by our so-called president Trump. It is sad that cowardly men and women feel emboldened by this Loser to commit these hatefull crimes.
