“We honor Mike Brown by doing the unthinkable, the unapologetic, and the unrepsectable.” These were the words released by local Black Lives Matter activists after they shut down an event for Democratic candidate for the President, Bernie Sanders.
According to the Seattle Times, Sanders was to speak in the city’s Westlake Park where a large crowd had gathered in order to celebrate Social Security’s 80th birthday as well as other anti-poverty programs. As soon as Sanders got on the stage however, no sooner after saying his first sentence, two women from Black Lives Matter got on stage and refused to let him speak.
The activists demanded that 4 and half minutes of silence be given to represent the 4 and a half hours Mike Brown’s body lay on the ground in Ferguson, Missouri after being shot by white police officer Darren Wilson. The reaction to the protestors was met with some loud jeers and boos by the largely white crowd. There were even calls for arrests.
Reportedly one of the activists, a Marissa Johnson fired back at the crowd, ““I was going to tell Bernie how racist this city is, filled with its progressives, but you did it for me.” Johnson said that the crowd’s liberalism consisted of, “white supremacy liberalism.” She also went on to talk about Seattle’s police problems.
Organizers of the protests had to declare the event over as a result of the protestors. Sanders would later get his chance to speak at another event that drew thousands in Seattle’s Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
