Roland Martin: The Case Of Crystal Mason
Crystal Mason was sentenced to 5 years in prison for illegally voting in the 2016 presidential election. While on probation for tax fruad, Mason was not aware that she was committing voter fraud. Roland Martin talks with Mason and her attorney Kim Cole about her case.
“I went to the church and I went up there to vote and he (worker) looked on the list and said my name wasn’t there,” explained Mason. She was told she could submit a provisional form to vote.
“I got a notification for my arrest that I illegally voted,” explained Mason. She had no knowledge that she was not allowed to vote while on probation.
“There are a couple of cases as a matter of fact in Tarrant county another woman was sentenced to 8 years in prison,” explained Cole.
As a result of this incident, Mason lost her job and is unable to take care of her four kids.
“She will be filing an appeal. We are going to diligently pursue an appeal in all hopes that they will review this and ensure that justice is served in this matter,” explained Cole.
