Inside Her Story: Why Black Women Should Invest In Mental Health

Dismiss

Black women go through so much and often never give any thought to their mental health.

Psychologist Dr. Joy Harden Bradford wants to change that with her website Therapy For Black Girls.

“I think there’s still a lot of stigmas related to mental health. It feels really weird to go to strangers and tell them your close personal business, ” says Bradford.

However, she does believe that the media has done a good job of trying to change that stigma. “I think we’re doing a better job. I was really impressed to see that on Insecure this season. I think it helps to pull back the curtain on mental health.”

Half the battle is realizing that mental health is good, but the other half is finding the right therapist. “There are not as many black women therapist,” explains Bradford. But on her website, she has a directory for Black therapists in each state so that Black women can get access to them.

  1. AS I drove to work today listening to the TJMS family, I caught this part of the show that spoke to my entire being right now. I literally just posted one of my “Quick Stories” to facebook where I share testimony of one of my many test that I face which is that of depression. I received great feedback and realized just how important talking to someone really is. Since sharing my piece, I have felt a bit of relief from what I have been battling for the last six months. I empathize with all whom are faced with depression so I comment today, just to say thank you for bringing the issue to the forefront so that others who maybe suffering can see that they are not alone and that there is nothing to be embarrassed about. I truly believe that now, since sharing my brief testimony, I am supposed to do something to help bring more awareness to this illness and you Dr. Reid as well as Dr. Joy were apart of my confirmation today. So thank you!
