Just days after Chance the Rapper took $1 million out of his pocket and handed it the financially-strapped Chicago Public Schools, a columnist from the Chicago Sun-Times decided to write about the artist…but not about his donation.

The column, written by Mary Mitchell, is all about Chance’s “messy split from the mother of his 18-month-old daughter,” which she claims, “threatens to overshadow the positive vibes created by his $1 million donation to the Chicago Public Schools.”

Don't worry about anything else. Do Your Job.

Mitchell, who is African American, begins by lamenting the fact that she has to “go hard on one of the good guys.” As a Chicagoan, she expressed pride over his Grammy wins, while admitting, “I hadn’t heard a single lyric the 23-year-old penned.”

She also wrote: “Besides, given the amount of bad news coming out of Chicago, it felt good to see a young black man from the South Side in the spotlight for something other than criminal behavior.”

And then she pivoted, writing:

Unfortunately, Chance’s personal affairs are less storied. Court filings show he’s been supporting his daughter financially, but a long-term child-support agreement hasn’t been reached. Last month, Kirsten Corley, the mother of Chance’s 18-month-old daughter, asked in court for temporary child support, as well as money to obtain and furnish a home. She also wants an automobile. Corley, who is unemployed, maintains that she is the child’s primary caregiver.

“Kirsten is essentially being held hostage in Chancelor’s residence as, on one hand, he will not assist her with the support necessary to obtain her own residence unless this entire matter is resolved on his terms, yet on the other hand, Kirsten does not have knowledge of what specific objections Chancelor has to her counter proposal and therefore, it would be impossible to resolve,” states Corley’s child-support petition.

A major bone of contention appears to be Chance’s request for the court to set “a child support award below statutory guidelines.” Typically, child support for one child is about 20 percent of net income. The rap star has asked the court to require that “both parties” contribute to the expenses incurred on behalf of the minor child.

Mitchell concluded:

People love gossip, and nothing’s juicier than the breakup of a celebrity couple. And there’s likely to be a lot of interest in this breakup for another reason. Right now, Chance looks like a hero in the ‘hood. But child support is an emotionally charged issue that plays a big role in the high level of poverty in the black community. If this personal issue is handled callously in the public, Chance the Rapper’s clean-cut image could take a big hit. After all, you can’t hand out money to benefit children you don’t know and come off looking like you are being stingy when it comes to your own child.

Really?

Chance the Rapper fired back immediately with a video posted to his Instagram account featuring himself, his daughter and her mother disproving the article’s claims that they are having issues.

They look pretty happy to me! First and foremost I am biased when it comes to @chancetherapper, I have REAL love for him. So let me get that out the way. This boy is simply AMAZING and I can say that first hand. After reading Mary Mitchell's article in the Chicago Sun Times I was very disappointed because there is no need for it! Anyone who follows Chance on social media knows first hand he is an awesome Dad! So what his child's mother took him to court to outline their child support agreement, THAT IS WHAT SHE IS SUPPOSE TO DO! Why do we make the assumption that just because a woman would like to have a legal agreement with her child's father over child support that the parents do not get along? I can't speak in all cases but I can speak on this one because I know him personally and he is truly amazing! There is no need to try to throw dirt on his name when he is trying to do so much for the city of Chicago. Is he perfect? Hell no. BUT are you? I know I am not perfect at all, I fall short every day in life, as we all do. SO Mary Mitchell, I know your goal was to write an article that could make it on the cover of the Chicago Sun Times, so job well done. I hope it was worth losing your "Black Card" over because as a black woman I am very disappointed in you for trying to take another black man down who is trying to uplift our city. As we know, black men are killed in Chicago often by either another black man or the police. Today we witness a black woman, Mary Mitchell, as the shooter. Fortunately, your bullets won't touch him because as the bible states, " No weapon formed against him shall prosper, And Every tongue which rises against you in judgement, shall be condemned, This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their righteousness is from ME." So Mary Mitchell, go have some tea with Ben Carson inside the Trump Towers and enjoy the rest of your day!

  3. Chance is with a white girl because Kirsten wasn’t white enough. Even though he’s doing for the community, he’s still hurting the community by being with white girls. He’s in the sunken place trying to get out and his show of philanthropy to CPS is an escape from his real truth. He should be uplifting a black woman by showing other inner city black boys it’s cool to be with a black woman and procreate with them. Inferiority complex. Black men are still dying to be accepted in this white man’s world by being with white women. I don’t listen to his music and I don’t support him or any other black artist who chooses to stay in the sunken place. Black women support these black men and they diss US for the clear girls. Puhleeeeeeezzz!
Glad I got my chocolate man!

  4. I’ll add this…I’m a bit older, and not very familiar with Chance the Rapper’s body of work. I heard part of one song on SNL, but that’s it. Hearing about the $1M donation to the public schools in Chicago was very encouraging. As for the article from Ms. Mitchell, I am not bothered by it and neither should anyone else….why?….because it’s simply a part of life and has ZERO impact on this young man’s generous act. Now, having said that, I will express MY concern about the contribution. I am curious about how the money will be used, and more importantly, did Chance negotiate some parameters to ensure that the TRUE benefit of his gift will be felt by the students, or will these funds end up being wasted on something that only benefits administrative personnel? My suggestion to anyone is don’t give any wasted attention to Ms. Mitchell….place your focus on the positive actions of Chance the Rapper, and hope that others in and above his tax bracket will find it in their hearts to add to his donation for the kids and the schools…..BLESSINGS!

    • Yes. I was hoping that Mr. Chance would withhold the money temporarily, ask the administrators at the specific schools he wants to benefit to form a committee along with the parents and maybe even a small number of children to develop a budget to submit to his staff. He will have to control the money because school districts can accept money, then distribute the money however they choose. The other option would be for both sides to sign a Memorandum of Agreement with specifics as to how/when/why/who will spend and benefit from the money. I don’t know this gentleman’s music either; but I was soo proud of him for stepping up.

Mary Mitchell you simple b*tch! It’s already hard enough for prominent black people to do anything for black people without getting blow back from their white handlers or white society. But you just HAD to as if it was your duty to massa. “I’s a get him fo’ ya massa!” You did the bidding for them, and you are truly a miserable wench. You do not know the details of what’s going on privately and you just want to shame him. No matter what, he will take of his child. Let this young man get his public shine and let him handle his personal business privately. You nasty old ass dirty vacuum bag!

Mary Mitchell can be so messy at times, its almost as if she know this young lady personally. Doesn’t seem as if Chance is a deadbeat at all, baby mama just want to live off baby daddy sounds like. Girl, get up and go get a JOB! You’re not the only mother that has raised kids, that’s your choice of not seeking somebody’s paycheck.

This is why Black People can’t get ahead! Instead of sticking together, some of us wait for any opportunity to bring us down! Mary Mitchell should be making a matching donation instead of slinging mud at Chance! GIRL BYE!

  8. What’s wrong with this B***H, is this any of her business, for her to write about? NO, he pays child support, the mother needs to get a job, this story shouldn’t have made front page.

  9. Never get between couples. She doesn’t seem like she’s unhappy. I figure a woman wrote this article even in our churches they’re always fill with discontent. Always stirring controversy. Peace

  10. It made front page, Sandy, because it is another tactic to demean the integrity of a Black man, and the paper felt it all the more news worthy because it was written by a Black woman. Too bad for her and the paper……

    • Really on said:

They demean themselves , yes the mother wants to get all the Money she can. However he will probably end up marrying a white girl and freely give up all he has.

      • They demean themselves? How? This demeaning story is one writer’s spin from a previous article about a young rapper donating a huge amount of his own hard-earned money to the school system. The family pictures demonstrates the amicable relationship. On another note, it’s nice when Black men choose Black women; but it’s not a crime or personal affront to Black women if/when they do not. This young man deserves to be applauded for his philanthropy, not torn down. God bless!
