Mike Colter is all the rage these days because of his role in the super-hot Netflix show, “Luke Cage.” If you haven’t seen it, “Cage” is a ‘hood based black super hero. But some in the community, particularly black women, are now kinda not feeling Colter as much since it was revealed that the actor’s wife, Iva, is white.

It happened on “The Wendy Williams Show.” When he was introduced, the mostly female audience was definitely on his side with their wildly enthusiastic response to him. BUT … when an image of him and his wife were shown to the audience, all of a sudden the response was different. He didn’t exactly go from hero to zero, but it wasn’t the same.

A TV One poll titled “Luke Cage’s Got A White Wife — Mad Or Nah?” found that 21% of people responded, “Not gonna lie — I’m a little hurt.”

Wendy didn’t address the issue on her show, but when Colter appeared on a New York radio station, they definitely went there.

Here’s how Colter responded:

“I love my sistas. People always go, ‘man that’s his type.’ If somebody caught a sista walking around with a 6-foot -seven brotha, is that her type? Next week you see her walking with a short brotha or spanish guy –do we have to have a type? I’m a human being. I look at people for character and what’s inside. Physically — that’s one thing — but you gotta be on the same page. I met my wife when I was struggling in grad school. She stuck with me for 16 years… people don’t understand when it comes to being with somebody long term, it’s way more than skin color that’s gonna make it work.”

When you get down to it, it’s hard to argue with Colter’s response as far as we’re concerned. What do you think?

  1. all i can say is hes a good actor and its his choice on who he wants to marry at the end of the day the only thing that should matter is your life and the almighty thank you

  2. He should not have to explain anything to anyone about his marriage. That is a slap in the face to his wife, as far as I am concerned!

Jehovah God is the creator of the marriage arrangement he is a loving God and he has no color code his son died for all mankind not a specific race. To me love comes in all colors,w hat God has put you two together let know man tear you apart with hatred or jealousy love each other forever and bring Jehovah into your marriage and your life. Be happy and continue to keep each other happy you know who has been there for you. You’re a beautiful couple.

    • Remember your history we’re sleeping, procreating with the ancestors of our kidnappers, tormentors, rapists, and murderers ! People who were still in caves when people of colour were educating the known world !! Kings should swing with queens and vice versa.

      • You do know that if you are sleeping and procreating with a black man or woman, you could be sleeping, and procreating with the ancestors of our kidnappers, tormentors, rapists and murderers, seeing as how the first black slave owner was black. People follow in the direction they are looking. Keeping looking back on the past, and that is where you will stay. How would you liked to be judged by the color of your skin instead of the content of your character? All because you may be a descendant of Anthony Johnson?

Steve: The word is descendants, not ancestors–as though that even mattered. Let’s get over all this race stupidity. We are all one species–homo sapiens or is it homo doofus?
