After news that a White actor was cast to play Michael Jackson on a British TV comedy series surfaced this week, an old interview featuring the King of Pop himself has confirmed what we already knew: White actors shouldn’t portray Black people – period.

It was announced Wednesday that Joseph Fiennes – of Shakespeare in Love and American Horror Story: Asylum fame would play Jackson in Elizabeth, Michael & Marlon.

The dramatization-style comedy will focus on a rumored road trip the three icons took from New York City to Ohio the day after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

Although many – including those close to the late Taylor – have refuted the old tale, news about Fiennes portraying the African-American entertainer took center stage yesterday. Fiennes shared his thoughts on the backlash, calling the comedy a “lighthearted take” on an urban myth.

Fiennes even said the late singer was closer to his own complexion in his later years.

Entertainment Tonight reports:

While Fiennes acknowledges that he might receive some criticism for playing an African-American, he doesn’t think his race should come into play. “[Jackson] definitely had an issue — a pigmentation issue — and that’s something I do believe,” the Shakespeare in Love star explained. “He was probably closer to my color than his original color.”

He added in defense of the movie, “It’s a light comedy look. It’s not in any way malicious. It’s actually endearing.”

Today, fans re-posted the interview Jackson gave to Oprah Winfrey 23 years ago, in which he addressed rumors that he wanted a White child to play him in a Pepsi commercial.

Via Billboard:

Jackson responded pretty adamantly: “That’s the most ridiculous, horrifying story I’ve ever heard. It’s crazy. Why would I want a white child to play me? I’m a black American. I am proud to be a black American. I am proud of my race. I am proud of who I am.”

Jackson’s family hasn’t commented on the show as of yet. Elizabeth Taylor will be played by Grease star Stockard Channing, and Brian Cox will portray Marlon Brando.

I agree with jhuf. Vitiligo does not explain MJ having his nose reshaped ’till it almost disappeared! Dude wanted to look as white as possible. His skin color did not resemble anything in the human family. Looked like a cadaver. Very talented person with some serious identify issues going on.

  2. White America once again stealing from black Americans; now white America is trying to steal Michael Jackson’s identity. Whites are trying to “whitewash” everything from black culture on a daily basis. Enough already! Your race/identity isn’t the only culture that matters on this earth.

    • You Got two out of three right. But the third is plain ignorance. Vitiligo – proved by experts, that he had the disease. I’ll be cool with this, just hoping a black man can play Frank Sinatra. I know we could do it better.

      • I’m sure “vitiligo” required him to reshape his nose to a white European style too, so called experts are payed to say what the payee wants to be heard, talk about ignorance when did Sinatra change his eye color or darken his skin

      • Jhuf, and what do you know that prove the experts wrong? Nothing. MJ had the skin disorder that is even in his death report. The bottom line, Michael was black and they can even get a light skin black actor to play him.

    • Well Mac, if you are going to judge MJ based on this list, then alot of us as blacks should not be upset if whites play us or mock us. many blacks are dating white women, having biracial white looking kids, having nose jobs, wearing straight hair weaves from foreign countries in which many say we are trying to look white, etc. So MJ is NOT alone if we are going to get self rightous about it and be ok with this white guy playing him. The bottom line MJ was black and they should get a black light skinned actor to play this part in time in MJ’s life.

      • Well now there you go Tammy lets embrace diversity after all we wanted to see a black man play James Bond and what’s wrong with a white man playing Shaft? BTW the fact that he had some quack doctor feeding him drugs tells me anything can be falsified, I guess Rebie Jackson has it too

      • James Bond is fictional charactor just like Shaft. Michael is a real person just like a white man trying to play MLK. or Mandela, etc. Big difference. As for MJ had a sleep problem that he used that drug to help him sleep because doctors told him that drug is safe to use. I do not blame MJ for that, I blame the doctor(s) (when doctors tell us we can do something, MOSt of us take their word). As for this skin disorder, you can look at MJ hands and his chest and see he had that disorder. No bleaching creme will make you that light; if so, Ambi and escatrica would do the trick which they do NOT (in fact, bleaching creme can make you darker). As I said, his medical examiner has it in his death report MJ has the disorder. SO what MJ came alive and told the medical examiner to say he has the disorder as well. Come on now jhuf.
