Actions speak louder than words and one woman let reading be her power during a rally for presidential hopeful Donald Trump.

This week, a video of Johari Osayi Idusuyi, 23, went viral after she was seen reading the award-winning book Citizen by Claudia Rankine on stage while Trump spoke to supporters in Springfield, Illinois. The writer and student spoke with Jezebel this week about how the Vine came to be.

Idusuyi said she was invited to the event by a friend. Because she wanted to give Trump a chance, she decided to attend. There weren’t a lot of minorities among the 10,000 supporters, so Idusuyi was invited on stage to sit behind Trump. While she was interested to see if Trump was different from her perception, she became disheartened after watching him and his supporters bully protesters in attendance, causing her to whip out her favorite book — which just so happened to be about racism.

Jezebel reports:

“I think we were chosen for obvious reasons,” she said about being picked to sit on stage. “We are minorities and there weren’t a lot of minorities there. He also instructed us to sit in the middle, so we kind of already knew what this was.

“I got tapped on the shoulder” she said.  “I think it was a couple. The woman kept saying, “If you don’t wanna be here then leave. You didn’t even stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.” I said, “I do want to be here, that’s why I’m here. You don’t know who I am. I’m reading my book because I’m uninterested. Did you not just see what happened? This person disrespects women, minorities, everybody and you’re still supporting him. He’s not saying anything of substance.”

Idusuyi said she didn’t plan to protest the event, but once she realized Trump had no interest in ever advocating for minorities, she turned to her book.

Jezebel reports:

“We weren’t trying to start anything,” she said. “We weren’t trying to make a scene and it wasn’t originally planned to be a protest. We just wanted to go in with an open mind and it turned into something bigger.”

The Vine has been viewed over 7 million times. Rankine’s publishers took to Twitter to thank the writer for her “reading protest.”

The moment couldn’t come at a better time — Rankine will be at Howard University Friday to read and discuss her book.

  1. The only reason why Dumb Trump is doing so well in the polls is that he has a large following of folks who think the way he does.

Trump is pandering to a RACIST/XENOPHOBIC/ HATEFUL base of Whites!!!!

I am a happy and confident racist

These last few months have been too good. Between the Black Lives Matter movement and the current Protests on College Campuses, it has been like Christmas and Hanukah wrapped up in one long racist holiday. I made the mistake of watching an hour of MSNBC tonight so I may be too giddy to finish this.

You see, I have been running communities for years. I do my best to keep the crime rates high, employment opportunities low and the educational systems broken. I rarely get credit for my hard work but I endure. Being a secret racist isn’t nearly as fun as getting recognition for it. Occasionally I pull off an unjustified shooting and just when I think I am finally going to get the recognition I deserve, it all dies down.

Being a racist is a full time job and sometimes it is a thankless job. The good news is that I’ve been getting away with it for over 50 years and the future looks bright for me.

I’ve always loved the colleges. 90 to 95% of the Administrators and Instructors think just like me. Universities are a racist’s playground. Finally the student protestors gave me credit, they acknowledged that I have been pulling off my racist antics on college campuses for the past forty to fifty years. Thank you. I really mean that.

I can count on a bright future. The best part of my institutionalized racism is that it will continue. You see in this upcoming election Hispanics will give me a statistically meaningful amount of votes and African Americans will vote for me on overwhelming numbers. I can almost guarantee it.

What do you call someone who does the same thing over and over but expects a different outcome? Never mind, I don’t want to insult my biggest supporters.

I can’t wait until 2017. I am working on some of my best racist antics for the next election cycle.

You know who I am, you vote for me every election cycle.

      This is BRILLIANT absolutely true.
A white male friend once told me that white people know exactly that they are being racist & choose to do so, I have never forgotten that statement, never!
      – Yes indeed the definition of crazy is doing the same thing over & over and expecting different results, we black people just need to STOP on expecting white people to have an interest in changing the status quo.
Well done to this black woman for using the situation to highlight the misogynistic racist that is Donald Trump- EXCELLENT.
      – Now, that is not doing the same thing over & over is it now….
