Ask Idris Elba if he really has a chance of playing James Bond and the actor will say that his moment as 007 has gone.

Shadow and Act reports that Elba addressed rumors of him playing the fictional superspy while speaking at London’s British Film Institute last week. With the chatter garnering headlines and speculation, the 42-year-old entertainer seemed convinced that all the hype may have killed the possibility.

“It’s a rumor that’s really started to eat itself,” said Elba, adding, “If there was a chance of me getting Bond, it’s gone.”

The rumors of Elba playing Bond ended up coming from current Bond Daniel Craig, the actor revealed.

“Daniel Craig actually set the rumor off. About 4 years ago he said Idris Elba would be a great Bond and then it started to creep,” he shared. “I blame Daniel.”

As for talk of him meeting with producers of the Bond franchise, Elba cleared that up, saying it “never happened.”

Shadow and Act noted that Elba’s response was may be pointed to comments made by “Skyfall” star Naomie Harris in a interview with the Huffington Post during a press tour for the 2012 Bond film.

In the interview, Harris mentioned that Elba told her he had met with Bond movie producer Barbara Broccoli as she stated that “it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond. And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he’s a great guy.”

Keeping with the Bond vibe, Elba went on to speak about remarks made by former Bond Sir Roger Moore about the character being played by an actor who is “English-English.” Moore later said his comments were “lost in translation.”

Responding to what Moore said, Elba said, “I was born here. I was born in England, born and raised.”

In addition to putting to bed all the James Bond rumors, Elba confessed that he was let go from his record label, Parlophone, in light of less than great sales of his most recent album. The move came after the actor signed with the label a year ago.

”The label dropped me after this album,” Elba stated while explaining that he dismissal came because his music was “not commercial enough” for the label. “It’s a risk to make a record with an actor and not everyone’s going to believe in that. In an industry that’s suffering, they have to put their money with the winners… It’s not commercial enough. Labels are suffering, there’s not a number one record on it – how do they justify spending money on it? I get it.”

Despite being dropped, Elba’s passion for music hasn’t diminished.

”If I didn’t get signed again, it wouldn’t stop me making another album,” Avengers: Age of Ultron” star said. “I’d just find another way to fund it.”
