A day after The Guardian reported shocking allegations that the Chicago Police Department illegally detains and beats suspects at a so-called CIA-like secret compound on the city’s West Side, law enforcement authorities on Wednesday released a statement denying the claims.

The police department told the paper that it “abides by all laws, rules and guidelines pertaining to any interviews of suspects or witnesses, at Homan Square or any other CPD facility.”

A report about the Homan Square facility in the Guardian newspaper on Tuesday alleged a string of abuses by Chicago police, which echo complaints leveled against the U.S. in its war on terror.

AFP reports:

The [Guardian] called the site an “off-the-books interrogation compound,” and quoted a protester once held there and a former public defender as comparing it to a “CIA black site.”

Detainees were beaten, resulting in head wounds, shackled for prolonged periods and held without legal counsel for 12 to 24 hours, including people as young as 15 years old, it said.

“At least one man was found unresponsive in a Homan Square ‘interview room’ and later pronounced dead,” the Guardian wrote.
