Bishop Charles E, Blake, 74, Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ and senior pastor at West Angeles Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles, apologized for homophobic statements spewed by Rev. Earl Carter during the 107th COGIC Holy Convocation in St. Louis.

“On Saturday evening, November the 8th, one of our more than 15 speakers used terms and spoke in a way that was offensive and inappropriate. “Though he alone is responsible for the nature and tone of his remarks, it was on my watch that this took place. Even though I was not present at the service on that night, as Presiding Bishop, I apologize for what seemed to be a harsh, uncompassionate, disrespectful spirit on the part of that speaker.

“I also apologize to Andrew Caldwell, a young seeker of The Lord who came forth and made statements on that night on his change of heart and his purpose. His testimony literally went viral and has brought upon him criticism and sardonicism. We extend our love, our prayers and our support that young man as he seeks to know God and to serve God.

“We believe that we should reflect the love and compassion of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in all that we do. And we do not in any way compromise our biblical position against same-sex unions are in favor of biblical teachings on matters of sexual conduct, but at the same time we expect that our clergy and laity will be civil and considerate as they speak to men and women regarding issues related to our Christian faith. We love all people regardless of their faith or their moral standard. And when we fail to express ourselves with love and humility we contradict the witness we strive to have to the world. The Church of God in Christ wholly condemns acts of violence against and the subjugation of any person to verbal and physical harassment on the basis of their sexual orientation of sexual stance.”

Bishop Blake concluded by saying that anyone who loves God is welcome in the Church of God in Christ.

Watch below as Bishop Blake also talks about how COGIC stands in solidarity with those seeking justice for slain Ferguson teen Michael Brown.

  1. What tha heck is he apologizing for???? But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

  2. Bunch of money collecting hypocrites. Where’s god with all the atrocities going on in the world?? Too many atrocities to name. I normally don’t like using the race card; but religion was created by the white man, and lots of black folks…….along with a bunch of other people in the world have eaten the ridiculous premise of the bible up

  3. If it was the same video with the young man saying he’s been delivered from homosexuality and a praise break following, I saw nothing wrong with that so what the heck is Bishop apologizing for. COGIC is not what it use to be, it’s too many of them have nasty attitudes, too many clicks, and its full of hypocrites.

  4. Bishop apologize on behalf of the preacher who said some harsh words about homosexuality. The words were vile, I dare not repeat them. COGIC loves everyone, however, they speak against sin and COGIC believes homosexuality is a sin. Love the sinner, hate the sin.

  5. Apologizing for what? Really Bishop Blake? I’m glad I’m no longer COGIC, a lot of them are mean church folks and hypocrites. All they seem to care about is how much money you give, who wears the biggest hat, who’s wearing the best looking shoes, the best looking outfit, who drives the nicest car, who has the biggest and prettiest house in the suburbs, it’s like a corporation now, loosing touch with GOD and what the Word of GOD says. HYPOCRITES

Why is he apologizing? I was raised in a COGIC church and that’s what they have always taught and still do. Why apologize if you don’t mean it. Isn’t that just plain lying? That’s a sin too.

  7. This does not surprise me coming from a Black church!

The last time I looked, the Bible did not preach hatred-it speaks of love for ones fellow man or woman-Black preachers need to remember this–no they are too busy being hypocrites!!!!!!
