Octavia Spencer is probably best known for her performance in The Help as Minnie, for which she won an Academy Award. She currently stars on the medical drama Red Band Society on Fox. The Alabama native also has an upcoming movie with Kevin Costner Black and White, where she plays the grandmother of a biracial child. Costner has said that he put his own personal money in to get the movie made, as race is still such a charged topic in Hollywood.

“It will be out at the end of the year and I’m having fun doing Red Band Society,” says Spencer.

Red Band Society has picked up four more episodes which is good news for the struggling new series. It airs Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. on Fox, but is on hiatus now due to The World Series.

Spencer grew up in Montgomery, “in the deep country” she says. She attended school in the area, but not for long.

“I went to Alabama State for a semester. I’m so proud of that little school, it just keeps going on and on,” Spencer says.

As for the rumors of a sequel to The Help, Spencer says she doesn’t know anything.

“I doubt that the author is thinking of it. Nobody’s mentioned one to me.”
