12-year-old Laporshia Massey died of an asthma attack because her school’s staff members were unable to immediately care for her.
The Bryant Elementary School in Cobbs Creek, PA only has a nurse on staff on Thursdays and Fridays due to the Philadelphia budget cuts; Massey became ill on Wednesday.
According to FOX, Massey’s father, Daniel Burch, and his fiancée, Sherri Mitchell, were not notified of her illness until later in the day. Also, both claim they were not notified that a school nurse was not caring for Massey.
The Daily Mail reports, “At the end of the school day a staff member drove Laporshia home at 3:15. Burch immediately recognized that his daughter needed immediate care after she ran up her stairs to grab her nebulizer machine.”
Burch rushed her to the hospital but she died that same day.
She died on September 25, 2013.
The tragedy is that the girl was not allowed to have her nebulizer at school so that she could administer it herself. She did not NEED a “school nurse,” but a common sense school policy that would allow her or a teacher to administer the medicine. To many people are allowing themselves to be rendered helpless because they’re waiting for a government employee do what they are fully capable of doing. I thank GOD that my oldest son was in a private elementary school. His nebulizer was kept in the classroom, taken to the gym or outside for P.E., and to the cafeteria during lunch so it would be available whenever he needed it. All we had to do was show his teachers how to use it.
October 20th is fast approaching and the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan will be announcing plans for a United Black treasury on this day to buy farms, build factories and make jobs for Black Americans. Yet still no mention from a website that even takes the time to report tabloid gossip. I am starting to wonder if Tom Joyner is not allowed to report this major event in history. Could it be that he is bought and paid for like Tavis Smiley suggested?
Budget cuts? So sad.
Very tragic
