NFL wide receiver Josh Morgan‘s mom and god mother both work at the Navy Yard and were there Monday morning when Aaron Alexis decided to go on his shooting spree.

Morgan, who plays for the Washington Washington Football Team, did not immediately hear from his mother, LaWanda Ware, telling reporters yesterday, “My godmother works in the other building. She’s doing okay. But I haven’t heard from my mother yet. I called like 30 times. Nobody has been able to get into contact with her. We’re just praying and hoping everything is OK”.

Luckily, both of his relatives ended up being okay but these were not the first close calls for the family. He explained to reporters, “Unfortunately it’s not the first time. It’s kind happened in 9/11 – she was at the Pentagon then. It happened to me when I was at Virginia Tech. With the shooting down there. We’re kind of too familiar with it unfortunately.”

Morgan attended Virginia Tech, the location of the largest single-gunman shooting in U.S. history in 2007, where 32 people were killed. Morgan was a junior at VT when that tragedy occurred.
