GENEVA (AP) — Tina Turner is on her way to becoming a Swiss citizen.

The American rock diva has lived in the Zurich suburb of Kuesnacht since the mid-1990s. The local Zuerichsee-Zeitung newspaper said on its website the local council announced its decision to grant the 73-year-old Turner citizenship in an official notice published in Friday’s edition.

The decision still requires formal approval from cantonal (state) and federal authorities.

  1. A lot of rich folks have been doing this lately since they no longer want to pay US taxes. If you are a US citizen, no matter where you live or make your money, you must still pay US taxes. A lot of rich folks living abroad largely ignored this rule and hid their money in Swiss bank accounts. But now that the IRS has gotten serious about cracking down on these tax-evaders, many of them have simply decided to give up their US citizenship.

Money is more important than country to some folks. Sad, if you ask me.

  2. you don’t lose your US citizenship when you become the citizen of another country, unless that country requires you to renounce any other citizenship – which Switzerland does not. She will be able to use either passport.

That’s untrue Robin. The US doesn’t recognize dual citizenship period. I have a British passport and if I became a US citizen it would require me to hand over my passport.

      • As an American currently living in Switzerland, I can confirm that the US does, in fact, allow dual citizenship. In a couple of years, I will have a Swiss passport and a US passport. It’s no problem. One holding dual US citizenship must simply enter and leave the US on their US passport and file a US tax return, but that does not mean that you pay US taxes. You are credited for the taxes you pay to the country you live in. Finally, dual citizenship is not the point with Tina Turner. She HAD dual citizenship but gave up her US citizenship. She is now only a Swiss citizen. Giving up her US citizenship is an irrevocable act. If a person has no plan to return to live in the US, there is little point in retaining citizenship and continuing to be scrutinized and assumed a tax cheat.

“However, dual nationals owe allegiance to both the United States and the foreign country. They are required to obey the laws of both countries. Either country has the right to enforce its laws, particularly if the person later travels there. Most U.S. citizens, including dual nationals, must use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States. Dual nationals may also be required by the foreign country to use its passport to enter and leave that country. Use of the foreign passport does not endanger U.S. citizenship. Most countries permit a person to renounce or otherwise lose citizenship. ”

  3. I envy her if she’s found her happiness. I wish I could leave America because of the how horrible life here has become under leftist rule. But I wouldn’t want to go to another leftist country. Where is there left to go? As I’ve heard from numerous people from Russian, Cuba, China, Africa, and Europe, they left their socialist, communist, marxist, lennonist birth homes to escape to here. they’ve said when they looked across the water, they could see their freedom in America. They’ve often said, at least they had someplace to escape to. As America begins to emmulate the failed countries of the world, it’s often said, where can an American look for freedom If America falls? Nowhere. So I stay here to fight the leftists every step of the way.

Be good to yourself — go to Somalia, where there’s no taxes or Obamacare — because there’s no government. A tea-partier’s paradise! But be sure to bring your semi-automatics — all those pesky bandits, you know.

      • BE YOURSELF TINA? Maria White, you’re wrong. Tina is classy, filthy rich, handsome husband and home in the Swiss Alps. A magnificent place to live and so what if she’s there for all the right reasons. Somalia she doesn’t need. She wanted a husband and has a classy one. PRIVACY IN EVERY WAY LIVING IN SWITZERLAND. She doesn’t have to put up with all the idiot photographers who think their “paparazzi’s”..any idiot can own a camera. And those fools make their day interrupting and invading others privacy and time. They don’t have that right so Tina said, “Why bother, I’ll live where I want, how I want and bugger off US.” Just as I would do if I had a husband, money and the chance to move there.

My comment was not directed at Tina but at Rocky, who wrote “I wish I could leave America because of the how horrible life here has become under leftist rule.”

    • I lived in England 3 yrs, visited Holland a week, Paris 2 weeks and discovered this; the US is great but I understand why others move. The US isn’t all that! look at our stinking governments way.
If I could, I’d go back.
