NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Court records show that the mother of Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas filed for bankruptcy earlier this year in Virginia.

Documents filed in January in the Eastern District of Virginia show Natalie Hawkins filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy, which allows a person to reorganize their finances and pay down debt over several years. The filing was first reported by TMZ.

The documents list Hawkins as having assets totaling $163,706, including a townhouse in Virginia Beach. Douglas, who has won two gold medals at the London Olympics, is from Virginia Beach but had moved to Iowa to train for the games. Hawkins also lists roughly $80,000 in debts.

An order issued in March says Hawkins is to pay $400 toward her debts over a nearly five-year period.

Hawkins' attorney declined to comment Sunday in an email.

Yep, I thought I saw somewhere Gabby is getting all kinds of endorsements, so if we as as parents are going to go broke or file banckruptcy, nothing wrong with going broke to help our children realize their dreams. Like the above poster said her financial issues should be a thing of the past as she is going to be rich.

This is such a non-story. Everyone faces hard times and she sacraficed for her daughter and it was well worth it. Mrs. Hawkin’s financial issues will no longer be a problem anymore, and for everyone who spoke about Gabby’s hair, first, shame on you and secondly, not that she cares what anyone thinks, that won’t be a problem anymore either. Some people are just haters and jealous. Let’s rejoice in her winning the gold medal and not worry about superficial things. BTW, they didn’t just single her out Gabby’s mom financial problems. Ryan Lochte parents are facing foreclosure.

Not sure why they are bringing this up as it has nothing to do with Gabby winning golds. Someone up above asked where is her father. He is serving in the military..

it was all for a good cause. She is a very good mother to do that for her daughter. I wish we has more mothers that would everything for her child express herself in a positive way.

What in the world does this hae to do with Gabby winning Gold. This is so disgusting! How dare they put her mother on front street. I hate the media.

WHO THE HELL went digging up Natalie Hawkins financial history? Gabby’s mother was very candid about her struggles and sacrifices in supporting Gabby’s dreams of becoming an Olympian so I’M SURE filing bankruptcy was part of that decision in order to save the little assets she had already acquired. AND IT HAS CERTAINLY PAID OFF!!!! With all of the endorsements Gabby will receive she will be able to pay off ALL of her mothers debts . . . AND THEN SOME!!!!!.
