Lady Gaga, Madonna, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae and Rihanna all owe a debut to Nona Hendryx. The groundbreaking former member of Labelle was making avant-garde music and wearing outrageous costumes The 67-year-old isn’t letting age slow her down. She’s just released a new album “Mutatis Mutandis” and is preparing to head out to promote it. You don’t know what “Mutatis Mutandis” mean? Well, neither does anyone who isn’t fluent in Latin. It’s Latin for “Changing things that need to be changed” and on this CD, Hendryx has no problem identifying what those things are. She does a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit,” the famous song about lynching, she takes on Rush Limbaugh in “Ballad of Rush Limbaugh” and the massive environmental devastation of oil spills in “Oil in the Water.”
