"FOMO happens when we invalidate the experience we're having because we're obsessed with the ones we're not having," says psychologist Arnie Kozak, Ph.D., author of Wild Chickens and Petty Tyrants: 108 Metaphors for Mindfulness.

Experts believe that it is a healthy response to variety and choice.

FOMO experiencers believe that social media only makes it worse by emphasizing events and choices that we are not experiencing at a present time. Photos and status updates from friends at a particular party or on the trip you decided to opt out of makes it difficult not feel regretful.
