Multiple reports out of Chicago say the arrest in Jussie Smollett’s attack case have revealed that the actor and the two men arrested, Nigerians who were extras on the set of Empire, helped Smollett stage the attack as he feared he was being written out of the show.

Chicago PD, via their spokesman, Anthony Gugliemi, has denied those reports, and an Empire spokesperson has weighed in as well, saying Smollett was not being written out of the show, according to AP.

Guglielmi says police Superintendent Eddie Johnson has contacted at least one Chicago news outlet to say investigators have no evidence to support their reporting. Guglielmi adds that Johnson said the “supposed CPD sources are uninformed and inaccurate.”

Twentieth Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment released a statement Thursday night calling the reports “patently ridiculous.” The statement says Smollett “remains a core player on this very successful series and we continue to stand behind him.”

An arrest has been made in the Smollett attack case:

CHICAGO (AP) — Detectives are interviewing two “persons of interest” who surveillance photos show were in the area of downtown Chicago where “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett said he was attacked last month, police said Thursday.

The two men aren’t considered suspects but may have been in the area at the time Smollett said he was attacked, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. Smollett said two masked men shouted racial and homophobic slurs before attacking him and putting a rope around his neck around 2 a.m. on Jan. 29.

Guglielmi told The Associated Press that the two men are the same people shown in surveillance photos released last month by police. Guglielmi said the men were identified through advanced technology, interviews with Smollett and witnesses, and transportation records.

Smollett, who is black and openly gay, told ABC News in an interview that aired earlier Thursday that he believes the people of interest are the ones who attacked him.

“I don’t have any doubt in my mind that that’s them,” he said. “Never did.”

No arrests have been made in the case. Police said they have not found surveillance video that shows the attack but that the investigation is ongoing.

Smollett also told the ABC News that people who question his narrative of the attack were “ridiculous” to think he would lie. Smollett has said he was attacked while out getting food at a Subway restaurant.

“I’ve heard that it was a date gone bad, which I also resent that narrative,” he said. “I’m not gonna go out and get a tuna sandwich and a salad to meet somebody. That’s ridiculous. And it’s offensive.”

He said he didn’t remove the rope from around his neck before police arrived “because I wanted them to see.”

The singer and actor said the attackers also yelled “this is MAGA country,” referencing President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. Smollett said earlier reports from some media outlets that his attackers were wearing “MAGA” hats were inaccurate.

“I didn’t need to add anything like that,” he said. “I don’t need some MAGA hat as the cherry on top of some racist sundae.”

Smollett said he didn’t want to call police at first, but that his friend and creative director, Frank Gatson, called on his behalf. Smollett also said he didn’t initially want to give police his cellphone because the device contained private content and phone numbers.

Smollett later gave detectives heavily redacted phone records that police have said are insufficient for a criminal investigation.

  1. This is why we all need to learn to hold judgement when people are accused. People today know society will react to anything and blow it up.

This thing is really unraveling and looks really bad for him. If this is a scam I don’t understand Jussie’s motive. Get national attention or people to feel sorry for him? This could ruin his career. Was it really worth the risk? I don’t think so. I just don’t get why he did this.

  3. Initially, I thought that Jussie was victimized by some homophobic racist but as each day passed by,I grew skeptical but kept my thoughts to myself ..being objective as I that someone could have assaulted him.

Man..I don’t know what to say about Jussie. He may have dug his own grave. It was said that he was going to get written off the show ( which has since then been retracted) but in case that was his reason for doing it..his career is over. On top of it,he may have caused his acting siblings problem.

Jussie should have let bygones be bygones. If he was being written of the show ,he should have fought to be in it or be an adult and accept the results. At least his reputation would have still been honorable.

  4. “this is MAGA country,” Chicago? Really 2 guys just happen to be walking around 2am carrying bleach, this is starting to sound more and more like as Trump would say FAKE NEWS and BTW who was arrested as the header claims

doused with bleach and beaten and his sandwich remains intact and still edible. As evidenced by the security camera in his building lobby. Additionally, he says nothing to the building security guards about the attack. Does NOT pass the smell test. He’s lying
