ROME (AP) — Gucci has apologized for a wool sweater after complaints that it resembled blackface makeup and said the item had been pulled from its online and physical stores.

It was the latest case of an Italian fashion house having to apologize for cultural or racial insensitivity.

In a statement posted on Twitter on Wednesday, Gucci said it was committed to diversity and considered it a “fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected and at the forefront of every decision we make.”

The turtleneck black wool balaclava sweater covers the nose and includes a red cut-out for the mouth. It was ridiculed on social media as insensitive and racist, at a time when the U.S. is grappling with cases of old photos of politicians with their faces blackened.

In December, Prada said it was no longer selling a line of accessories that featured a character with brown skin and exaggerated red lips after complaints they resembled blackface.

And last year, Dolce & Gabbana canceled a Shanghai runway show and apologized after complaints that an advertising campaign featuring a Chinese model trying to eat pizza, spaghetti and a cannoli with chopsticks was culturally insensitive.

It’s just a sweater, if you don’t like it…don’t buy it. We have many more important problems than a sweater…looks like a rolled up turtle neck..!!!!!!!

Agreeing with you! Just get rid of the red outline and I’d wear it when deployed to keep warm… I don’t think any intention mentioned, I just think it was taken the wrong way…. Many continue to keep the division wall up in one form or another and that’s sad!!!

  3. EXACTLY!!! I believe they do it for the shock level. They want to stimulate society and see what our reactions are going to be. No-one in their right mind thought this was a good idea.

  4. There is no possible way this was a mistake since the sweater has a red set of lips. This sweater never needed to be produced and the designers that made it knew it was a knock at the racist attitudes of the minstrel shows in the US during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

  5. AWFUL!!!!
This just goes to show that these high-end fashion designers DO NOT respect PEOPLE of COLOR.
If that were the case, incidents such as this would not be occurring.

BOYCOTT-GUCCI, Louis Vuitton, Dolce& Gabana and any others who DIS-RESPECT US
    as consumers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank goodness I can still wear my black cashmere scarf around my face when it’s cold & windy.
Racism is in the eyes of the beholder on the turtleneck sweater. Stay racist.

Geez. It just looks dumb. She looks ridiculous for modeling it. Now did they do this sweater in all colors or just black? If just black – you know it was intentional. You know the sad part is some coon (many who are on this site) would wear it. Should have left it on the shelf so we can know who our stupid coons are.
