Former NFL wide receiver Rae Carruth has been released from prison after serving 18 years for conspiring to murder the mother of his unborn child.

The Carolina Panthers’ 1997 first-round draft pick was released Monday from Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton, North Carolina, after completing his sentence.

Carruth, now 44, was found guilty of orchestrating a plot to kill Cherica Adams on Nov. 16, 1999, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to avoid paying child support. Adams was shot four times while driving her car, but managed to make a 911 call that helped implicate Carruth.

Adams fell into a coma and died less than a month later after the shooting.

The child she was carrying, Chancellor Lee Adams, was delivered by emergency cesarean section but suffers from permanent brain damage and cerebral palsy.

  1. Exactly. This is such an unforgiving world. They only want forgiveness when it applies to them or their loved ones. We gotta be careful of the words we speak of others, less we find ourselves needing grace or mercy.

He needs to get to the point where he can leave the country and start a life somewhere else. God will take care of him in the next life.

He shouldn’t have access to the boy, but any proceeds he gets from his story should go to the boy. Ray shouldn’t profit.

  4. He should live with the awful disgusting thing he did while behind bars for the rest of his life but for him none of this would have happened. No justice here

He will have to live with this the rest of his life. Let him see his child so he can be reminded of what he did to him and his mother for the rest of his life. He needs to look in his child’s eyes and see that he caused his Son’s disabilities and the cause of his mother’s death. Let him suffer inside let eat at his very soul. He is a coward he could have walked away like a lot of these men have done instead he had her life taken and cause his child to be disabled.

    • He should never be aloud even near that young man again. He caused him not to have his mother and to be permanently disabled because he was a fucking coward. I hope the grandmother sued him for every dime of child auooort she can get. I heard he’s trying to right a damn OJ type book about “how he didn’t do it.” And I hope they make him pay any proceeds that he receives from the dummies who would even buy that garbage, to that grandmother. Other than that, I hope he never lives one peaceful moment for the rest of his entire life!

He cared nothing about his son when he paid an hit man to murder mother and child. Carruth deserves to spend his entire life in prison.

I feel he should have gotten more time. I don’t feel he should be allowed to gain custody of his son, after all he WAS responsible for her death.

The courts followed the charged guidelines and sentenced Rae accordingly, thus he’s free. No, I do not see him attempting to gain custody of Chancellor, but he should want to be a part of his son’s life. Rae erred, badly, caused a life to be lost. God has given him redemption, but mankind doesn’t want that for him. We’re it you or any of your family members, you would want what Carruth was just granted. Another chance.

Be it known, I do not condone Rae’s actions, but Christian folk, God has his plans.

he didnt shoot her he just put the hit on her, if you don’t like the verdict, you need to vote and put the right people in place to make change so this will never happen again

      • So since he “just put the hit” on her that mitigates his guilt? He specifically had her to follow him to the agreed upon spot where she was shot and he watched. The sentence did not fit the crime but that’s how it works sometimes, the system is flawed.

Wow, it don’t seem to have been 18 years since this happen, it was premeditated murder why did they go easy on him when he plotted to kill her? The Grandmother I’ve since read is willing to allow her grandson to have a relationship with this man for the sake of her grandchild, I pray it don’t come back to bite her again…I’m sure she is a woman of faith…going against that animal

A walking sociopath, an animal who tried to kill his unborn child because he’ didn’t want to pay child support…I bet the IG ho’s will be lined up for this monster.

  11. Rae Carruth should’ve received a LIFE sentence.

He had the mother of his son “murdered” in cold blood-simply because he DID NOT wish to
    pay any child support.

Since the girlfriend’s mother has been taking care of Carruth’s disabled son, RAE should NOT be allowed to see the son since RAE NEVER WANTED HIM in the first place.
