ROCKFORD, Wash. (AP) — A student who opened fire in a hallway at a Washington state high school killed a classmate who confronted him Wednesday and wounded three others before being stopped by a custodian, authorities said.

The suspect, who a classmate described as being obsessed with previous school shootings, was taken into custody. The wounded victims were seriously injured but expected to survive, officials said.

The shooter brought two weapons to Freeman High School in Rockford, south of Spokane, but the first one he tried to fire jammed, Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich told reporters.

“He went to his next weapon,” Knezovich said. “A student walked up to him, engaged him, and that student was shot. That student did not survive.”

The sheriff said the shooter fired more rounds down the hallway, striking the other students, before a school custodian approached the shooter and ordered him to surrender, Knezovich said.

Knezovich called it a courageous act that prevented further bloodshed.

The sheriff said a deputy who works as a school resource officer arrived shortly thereafter and took the shooter into custody.

Elisa Vigil, a 14-year-old freshman, told The Associated Press that she saw one male student shot in the head who janitors covered with a cloth and another female student wounded in the back.

Michael Harper, a 15-year-old sophomore, said the suspect had brought notes in the beginning of the school year, saying he was going to do “something stupid” and might get killed or jailed. Some students alerted counselors, the teen told AP, but it wasn’t clear what school officials did in response.

A call to the school was not immediately returned.

Harper said the shooter had many friends and was not bullied, calling him “nice and funny and weird” and a huge fan of the TV show “Breaking Bad.” He also said the suspect was obsessed with other school shootings.

Students say the shooter was armed with a pistol and rifle and had carried a duffel bag to school. After shots were fired, students went running and screaming down the hallways, Harper said.

Authorities didn’t release the suspect’s identity or a possible motive. The victims also were not named.

Luis Prito, an assistant football coach at Freeman High, called the shooting devastating. A vigil took place Wednesday evening at a nearby church.

“This is a real close-knit community,” he said.

A two-lane road into the town of about 500 people near the Idaho border was clogged as worried parents sped to the school. Some people abandoned their cars on the street to make it to their children.

Cheryl Moser said her son, a freshman, called her from a classroom after hearing shots fired.

“He called me and said, ‘Mom, there are gunshots.’ He sounded so scared. I’ve never heard him like that,” Moser told The Spokesman-Review newspaper. “You never think about something happening like this at a small school.”

Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children’s Hospital received three pediatric patients, spokeswoman Nicole Stewart said. They were in stable condition and surrounded by family, she said.

Stephanie Lutje told AP she was relieved to hear her son was safe after his high school near Freeman High was put on lockdown. She commended the school district for its communication.

“It’s been amazing, within probably 15-20 minutes of hearing about it, I’d already received a phone call, I’d already received a text message saying that their school is OK,” she said.

She still worried for others she knew, including a co-worker who had yet to hear from her son, a sophomore at Freeman.

“My stomach’s in knots right now,” she said.

Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement that “all Washingtonians are thinking of the victims and their families, and are grateful for the service of school staff and first responders working to keep our students safe.”

  1. Response from fake doctor since he’s over there commenting on the Kenneka Jenkins story. So, he asked that I post this for him.
Wow. Is there some type of chemical reaction that is taking place with these meth addicts that is making their brain short circuit? Had his mom stayed off of meth, and not had sex with his brother, and maybe moved from that trailer park, he wouldn’t be so depressed that he would have to go and shoot up the school and kill innocent people.

hahaha, sounds like something the fake doc would say, word for word, it’s almost like you were inside his little pea-size head lol.

    • I pray that the families of murdered children do not come upon sites that spew this kind of ignorant and hateful dialogue. As if they don’t already have enough hell to deal with. Why would you let yourself sink down to lowest common denominator just because someone who may not even be real does his best to instigate and antagonize? Someone lost a child and this is what your heart tells you to post, even though someone in this innocent child’s family just may, by chance be someone who frequents this site. My God. Have mercy on our souls.

Are you serious kates? One, certainly it’s not funny that someone lost their life and others hurt as a result of the mentally challenged fool, so the humanity in me has empathy for their families and friends. Two, you never have this same amount of anger when fake doc or the other hillbillies come on here with their hate speech. Almost on a daily basis those trolls come on this site and spew their hateful rhetoric against black women and black people in general. But you always seem to laugh it up or co-sign on their comments. Am I missing something here? Where is your passion filled speech to fake doc and his cronies?

      • I don’t have the same amount of anger when Larry and a few others who come on this site just to see how crazy they can make people, is because I don’t take them seriously Why would I? I sometimes laugh at what they say because it’s funny. Not serious. However, whenever anyone, I don’t care who it is says something that has a ring of truth to it, I’m woman enough to agree with them, no matter how many times they’ve said things that I don’t agree with. What I will not do, under any circumstances is let myself be dragged down into the sewer by spewing hate, bigotry, and ignorance. Anyone who takes anything these instigators say seriously enough to actually try carrying on serious dialogue with them has their own set of problems that need to be addressed. I only hope that if by chance the family of a murdered child came on this site, they would find some measure of comfort in words posted by people who have some measure of compassion for other humans. That’s all I’m saying.

I wrote a response, but I decided not to post it. Just know tho, God already has mercy on ALL of our souls, because he doesn’t give us what we deserve, that’s why we wake up everyday thus far, he gives us another chance to get it right.

    • Shooting up schools, churches, office buildings, their gfs/bfs, wives and husbands, and kids is what they do. Look how they just left those elderly folks down in Florida to die. Look at what that crazy white man did to his ex-wife and those other INNOCENT people he killed in Texas. The police here in MD (Wilde Lake), just arrested the white boyfriend for the murder of his 31 yr old girlfriend, who was a school teacher and 4 months pregnant. They don’t give a shit about their own, yet always want to criticize the black community. You know the old saying…people should clean up their own backyard before they critique someone else’s issues.

As fake doc would say, this kid was raised by a single white woman who’s a meth addict, and no baby daddy around.

You got that right! Where is the photo of this demon seed? We ALL know had this kid been black, his face would have been lit up like a Christmas tree on the internet. His grades in school, his home life, his moms childhood history, EVERYTHING would have been highlighted. White privilege, is why he’s still alive.
