A Ku Klux Klan leader tells AL.com that the hate group distributed about 4,000 fliers across Selma and Montgomery over two weeks in an effort to counter this weekend’s 50th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday,” a major turning point in the Civil Rights Movement.
AL.com reports:
Robert Jones, the grand dragon of the Loyal White Knights of the KKK spoke with AL.com Sunday afternoon and said about 4,000 KKK fliers have been distributed throughout Selma and Montgomery in the last two weeks.
“We pretty much put out fliers, some against [Dr. Martin Luther] King [Jr.] and some against immigration,” Jones said. “It’s time for the American people to wake up to these falsehoods that they preach about MLK.”
Jones said bags containing a flier and a rock were thrown onto the doorsteps of people’s homes as KKK members drove by. He said the rock acted as a paperweight, and the homes that received fliers were random.
Jones said the fliers were distributed in an effort to attract new members, tackle immigration, and demystify the myth of Dr. King. Without mapping out his concerns, he says of King, “people are supporting a man they don’t know about.”
We should thank Jones, not for the hatred and misinformation that his group conveys, but for keeping us informed about just how much work remains to be done 50 years after the historic civil rights marches.
