NEW YORK (AP) — A white New York City police officer who was cleared Wednesday by a grand jury in the death of an unarmed black man says it was never his intention to harm anyone.

Officer Daniel Pantaleo says he feels very bad about the death of Eric Garner and hopes Garner’s family will accept his condolences.

Amateur video shot by an onlooker showed Garner refusing to be handcuffed. Pantaleo responded by putting Garner in what looked like a chokehold, which is banned under NYPD policy. Garner was heard yelling, “I can’t breathe!”

Garner’s father says the decision made no sense. Family attorney Jonathan Moore says he is astonished.

Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan says he applied for a court order to release some information on the investigation.

  1. The use of the “choke-hold” is supposed to be illegal. That in and of itself should have brought an indictment against that POS pig.

The borough of Staten Island was once and probably still is predominately Italians. Mafia boss Paul Castellano had a mansion in SI. So is it any wonder that the grand jury refused to indict one of their own!!!!!!

I hope that Mrs. Garner can pursue a civil suit against Panteo for “wrongful death”,
although that won’t bring her husband back, it may bring her some inner peace.

  2. Putting out a statement of an apology is an insult to the family. Why now, and when the incident took place? I don’t know how these Prosecutors and Grand Juries sleep at night; and live with themselves each day.

  3. Every time they killed black people the prosecutor send the case to a Gand jury, something wrong with this picture, where are the black gangsters at, if you can shoot in your black community, why arent you shooting at the poice in a moment like this

  4. That is a lie. That is a statement prepared by his lawyer sent out to the media. He said, “yes I killed the n-word so what”..
