If You’ve Got ‘Em, Check ‘Em

  • The month of October has come and gone. Breast Cancer Awareness month is over. The country will now retire the color pink until Easter, unless you are an AKA or a new born baby girl. We’ve had 31 days dedicated to saving and protecting boobs. What nice thing for a nation to do! It’s a bit different from the way we usually celebrate our breasts. All plumped up inside of a Victoria Secret bra, or hanging  low and free in a comfy t-shirt. Or my favorite: freshly released from my bra with a good under-boob-scratch. Ahhhhh, that’s good living.

Today’s scratch came with a letter in the mail. The results from my mammogram. Happy to say the girls I grew up with, as I like to call them, are healthy. Thank God. This year I was nervous about getting my mammogram. Truth is, I was very behind on my exams, letting a couple of years go by without getting them checked. It was totally out of fear and stupidity. The fear came after I had a family member be diagnosed with breast cancer. The stupidity came when I tried to ignore the fact that it was now in my blood line. Someone actually related to me, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Into the sand went my head. Yeah, it was stupid. Fear and stupidity are two things that should never go together. It’s like sleeping with an ex. The fear is, you’re afraid you won’t find anybody else, and the stupid is.. answering that phone call at  2 a.m. Sigh.

So my fellow boob carriers, if you haven’t had your mammogram this year, it’s not too late. You don’t have to wait until next October. Just pick up the phone and schedule your exam. It takes less than 30 minutes. It doesn’t matter when you get it done, just get it done. It also doesn’t matter if you’re male or female. If you got ‘em, check ‘em.
