    My mother takes care of my great nephew and she is on social security. I financially support both of them. Can I carry my great nephew? 
    There are certain rules governing whether or not you can claim someone as a dependent including: To claim a dependent you must not be able to be claimed as a dependent by any other taxpayer. In addition, you generally cannot claim an exemption on a dependent who is married if they file a joint return. You cannot claim a person as a dependent unless that person is a U.S. citizen, a U.S. resident, U.S. national, or a resident of Canada or Mexico for some part of the year. To be a dependent, the person must be your child or relative and meet the appropriate Gross Income and Support Tests.     My mother-in-law had to retire from teaching and move in with us.  Can we claim her and does she still need to file taxes with her teacher’s retirement?

    When does the IRS start accepting the taxes and, if I have a 1099, can I file without it?
    Our friends at Jackson Hewitt Tax Service® can start your return with your last paycheck or Form 1099. However, the IRS will not begin accepting returns until January 30th this year. If you finish up your return with Jackson Hewitt, then once January 30th comes, they can send directly to the IRS.
