  • Kiana Howell (pictured left) and her cohort Makeeba Graham (pictured right) were arrested Sunday morning at New York’s JFK International Airport, when customs officials discovered more than two pounds of cocaine that had been secured in to their hair weaves, reports The Daily Caller.

The women had just arrived from Georgetown, Guyana, and according to officials, they were fidgeting and appeared uneasy as they approached the airport’s customs checkpoint.  As the pair were patted down by customs officials, the officers allegedly felt bulges in their heads.

Kiana Howell Makeeba Graham New YorkWhen asked to remove the weave, Howell said that she could not “because she had a package that was sewn in to it.” The woman then informed the customs officials that she did not know what was in there but that it had been secured to her head and that her Guyanese boyfriend “told her to bring that package under her hair weave to the United States for him.”  The young woman also informed the officials that she had been promised $7,500 to “smuggle the package under her hair weave.”

Howell then had to be escorted to a medical facility, where her weave was dismantled. Reportedly, the young woman was carrying 996 grams of cocaine in her weave.

According to an affidavit sworn by Department of Homeland Security Agent Jeffrey Fidler, Graham also “had an unusually high and bulky hair style.” After a CBP agent “felt a hard object on the defendant’s head,” Graham, a 33-year-old Harlem resident, was “asked to remove her hair weave.”  Graham informed the customs officers that her hair had been sewn to her head as well so she could not remove it.  Like Howell, Graham was then taken to the medical facility where her weave was dismantled. Officials discovered that she had been harboring another 1,046 grams of the drug in her weave.

    1. Some of you black folks can be so ridiculous…why is it always RACISM?! Have you ever traveled outside the US? I have… and I have seen several WHITE women asked to take down their buns or shake out their long ponytails. The article says the women looked uneasy…isn’t that a signal to see what’s up? They are CRIMINALS…you don’t need to defend every silly mistake somebody black makes. Was it your cocaine?

    2. I agree that it was dumb, but darn, either your are white or wish you were (male or female). I travel a lot and I have never seen anyone’s weave checked. Including my own. But, I am sure it is going to happen more often now that people like you have given the okay. No need to reply, I understand where YOU are coming from. :)

    4. This is not racial profiling. They have been checking weaves for some time now. But come on my black brothers and sisters, don’t give a reason to be searched. This was just plain DUMB and STUPID. Their butts are going to jail, not the boyfriends.

    5. Oh, here we go, racial profiling. You can bet that if Brittany, Christina, Madonna, and a host more are not patted down in their head and their weaves, sisters should not. Come on bros. I am their protesting their racial profiling of you, come to our aid. You owe it to us. Black women didn’t invent the hair weave and we are not the only ones wearing them. Not buy a long shot. While they are setting up profiling protocol, they need check some of those balooned up tits, butts and the like.
