My First Time: Smokie Norful Credits Dad For Inspiring His Big Audience Debut

With a profound voice that could only have been bestowed by God Himself, GRAMMY-winning gospel sensation Smokie Norful is no stranger to the stage — it’s practically his second home! It’s the kind of innate confidence that would surprise many to discover he was actually a shy child growing up, so much so that it almost put a halt to his successful singing career overall.
Thankfully, the good Reverend W.R. Norful was there to whip him into shape. Almost literally.

Smokie joined us for “My First Time” to give us the story of how his first performance in front of a big audience went. Before he could effortlessly command the attention of thousands like he does today (see above), there was an important lesson he had to learn about self doubt, overcoming fear and, well, decision-making after getting the ultimatum to either sing or get a whooping.
