A:  The ketogenic diet is low-carbohydrate diet.  Before starting any diet we recommend discussing options and goals with your health provider.  

 

Q: Doctor, what kind of vitamins can you use for memory and healthy brain function?

A: Some vitamins and supplements may support brain function, but the evidence is mixed. AARP recently published an article addressing this topic, which you can find here.

Q: At what speed should you walk?

A:  The speed at which you walk should be determined by your comfort and fitness level, heart rate, and exercise goals. It could be useful to monitor your heart rate using a fitness tracker or heart rate monitor. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should talk to your provider if you have serious health issues or if you’re over 40 and have been inactive.

 

Q: I have not gotten my AARP card and I made 50 in July. What do I have to do to get one?

Q: How do I get into good sleeping habits?

A: Some tips are to keep a consistent sleep schedule, turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime, and avoid consuming caffeine late in the day or evening.

 

Q: I typically spend at least 35 minutes on the treadmill every day and watch what I eat, (1200 calories or just under daily) yet I am maintaining the same weight instead of losing. Any ideas?

A: Great job sticking to a fitness routine and maintaining a healthy diet! It’s not always about the calories but the types of food you eat. Fewer carbohydrates and higher protein content will help, but you also want to make sure you’re not consuming too few calories, as that can slow metabolism. We recommend discussing with a health provider.

 

Q: Hey, I’m a 46 year old black male and I’m wondering if you could give me some tips on how to lose my belly fat.

A: Eating a healthy, high-fiber diet and lowering sugar intake can help, as well as exercising regularly. Limit alcohol intake, try to reduce stress, and get enough sleep. Before starting any diet, we recommend discussing options and goals with your health provider.  

 

Q: How can you walk when you want to walk but you got arthritis in both knees?

A: Living with arthritis can be painful and frustrating. There are a variety of range-of-motion and low-impact exercises that can help people with arthritis reduce joint pain and improve strength and flexibility, but we recommend talking to your provider to discuss and figure out what works best for you.
