Listen Live

This episode ends with Nova deciding not to move forward with Remy, maybe for the time being, maybe for good. Charley and Micah have their own reckoning as Charley burns up all the magazines she still has with Davis on the cover while Micah joins her. Hope it felt cathartic for them both.

My issue with Queen Sugar in Season 3 is this – Season 2 seemed like it struggled sometimes to maintain momentum over an expanded 16 episodes. This year, it feels like the characters – with the exception of Ralph Angel, Darla, and Charley – are underwritten or not evolving. Nova was much better in action – watching someone writing a book proposal is boring AF. She’s been sidelined so far and it’s not fun to watch.

I love Aunt Vi getting her just due with the pie business, but struggling with a chronic illness is much more serious than just aching hands or talking about med changes. I don’t want her sick – but if she’s going to have an illness, let’s make it deeper than that. There are very real psychological fears to parse even if her symptoms are manageable.

Characters are becoming two-dimensional. Davis is a mess, but so are many men. Do we ever get to figure out why he’s so twisted and if there’s any part of him that is good? Darla has become unlikable. She has to know she dropped a bomb on Ralph Angel and that it would take time for him to process it emotionally. Remy, who was so good last year, has been reduced to an afterthought this year.

Hollywood is just too damn nice. Not saying there aren’t kind, loving men out there, but why bring up his getting all that money if the way he’s managing it doesn’t factor into the storyline? The Nova we know would have let Remy get it and then backtracked. That’s who she was in the previous seasons. It’s almost like the writers of Queen Sugar have decided who’s good and who’s bad and are afraid to let every character be multidimensional and messy.

And while I understand each episode is just 42 minutes, factoring in commercials, and the pace is not conventional, both characters and the action needs to be stepped up. There are 16 episodes to play with now – each one should reveal more, not lead us into the next one feeling like we’re waiting for things to play out way down the line.

Thoughts on Ep Six, Sugar babies? Share them and we’ll see you next week.
