There is a serious lack of good authentic movies made on the history of African-Americans. Many of those that have been made have been twisted and turned to suit a particular narrative, to cater to the wider audience of White Americans.

Here we mention 3 must-watch movies, which have defied the mindset of wider audience to represent history as it transpired:

Malcolm X

Directed by Spike Lee, “Malcolm X” is a representation of the life of the fierce civil rights activist Malcolm X. Malcolm Little, was handsomely portrayed in the film by prodigy Denzel Washington in a role, which to-date is known as one of the most deserving performances to not be honored with an academy award.

Lee does a good job portraying the evolving views of Malcolm Little as his fight for civil rights changed with time. The movie also does justice to the activism that Malcolm was so fond of. The movie rightfully portrays Malcolm Little as a fiery yet judicious African American, who fought to change the way Blacks lived in America. The movie also cemented Washington as one of the best African-American actors of his generation.

Amistad

When Steven Spielberg directs a movie, there is not much room for criticism. Interestingly, before the release of Amistad, a film based on the events aboard a slave ship named La Amistad, Spielberg was under pressure due to his below average direction in “The Color Purple”.

The film closely follows the mutiny within the slave ship which was heading to Cuba. The slaves that initiated the mutiny were then arrested and tried in court. Spielberg, through brilliant visual aid, depicts a vivid replication of what exactly transpired in the La Amistad and how important a role it had to play in the complex nature of slavery at the time.

Ali

Numerous documentaries and films have been made on the character of one of the most renowned boxers in the world, Mohammad Ali. But they often succumbed to the charisma that was attached with Ali’s character rather than focusing on his social ideology. “Ali” was directed by filmmaker Michael Mann, who understood and delved on the fact that Ali orchestrated what was to be an extraordinary era of African-American politics. Handsome, classy, big and proud, Mohammad Ali was wonderfully depicted by the ever-popular Will Smith.

The film picks up when Mohammad Ali is already a champion and is known as Cassius Clay, before he converts to Islam. The film captures some of the most tumultuous years of Ali’s life as he refuses to volunteer for Vietnam, standing up for his beliefs instead.

I attended the party and brought drinks. They served at the party hamburger & hotdogs, potato salad, lettuce, tomatoes. 3.8 Last Week of May During Preview Week in class on the BU campus, Alden Smith asked me to give an account of my Father’s work, asking me if my Fathers work is ‘Rich Intellectual’. I was the only student he ask this question to. Alden Smith in class says richly intellectual Pastors don’t exist. 3.9 During BU Preview Week The End of May 2015, I Gave Alden Smith A Copy Of My ADA OALA Accommodations Letter. 4.0 Left for Italy on 6th June 2015. 4.1 Tuesday 9th June 2015 while in Europe I informed by Emailed Alden Smith, David White, and Jeff Hunt Of My Disability and Handicap and ADA OALA Accommodations. Notifying them that the pace of walking was too extenuating and exhausting for me, and I asked for their assistance to help me finish this Study Abroad Italy Program. Requested lodging room on first floor of hotels, if the hotels without ADA Accommodations (like elevators). Also, included in email was my concerns that because of my inability to keep up with the other students, was a contributing factor that caused them to display resentment, disrespectful, and noncaring attitude toward me. 4.2 For first two weeks of the trip all students were ordering their meals directly with the waitress or waiter. Prof. David White and Jeff Hunt were in charge of the program for the first two weeks. 4.3 The third week of June (15th June 2015) Prof. Alden Smith joined the group in Italy. The first day of his arrival he made the statement “there would be a lot more pizza and pasta”, meaning that those items would be our menu choice. He stated “that all special orders must go through him”. 4.4 15th June 2015 during lecture I approached by Prof. Alden Smith asked me not to film him, that it make his nervous and that he can’t do”, he can’t teach if I was filming him”. I turned off my camera off. The camera (recording of the lecture) was a tool that assisted me with my learning disability. Note: digital/video recording of this interaction. 4.5 15th June 2015 I sent an email to Prof. Alden Smith as a follow up to discuss my concerns about the change with how we should order our meals. The meal/food of the day were being paid out of our program fee $4,995.00. In the email, I mentioned that Prof. Alden Smith was aware that I was a vegetarian, I usually order my food and before his arrival I had no problems ordering my meals. I also mentioned in the email that it was out of the ordinary and only apply to the only people making special orders were the vegetarian. 4.6 15th June 2015 at 6:58pm I received an email response from Prof. Alden Smith stating “he was sorry that I found the new policy vexing. Unfortunately, he would advise me to abide by the new policy, perhaps it would be helpful for me to think of him as the group waiter. He would make sure as he did today, that I and Zach (another vegetarian) were the only students requesting specialty food. The email mentioned that if I could not abide by the policy, he would be happy to give me a meal allowance and I could go to a restaurant separate from the group.” 4.7 16th June 2015 I responded to his email inquiring about the meal allowance. The next several days I received meal allowance and went to different restaurant. 4.8 19th June 2015 the group is in Cantagallo, Prato. Prof. Alden Smith prevented me from eating at the same restaurant by holding the door and his exact words were “you can’t eat with us though” and I said I was not going to eat with the group, and then he asked me “well what are going to do”? I answered “eat” but not with you. He then said “oh, you going to eat here separately from us”, and I said “yes”. He then said oh, “I thought you were going to eat with us”, he mentioned this particular statement three times. I ate at the same restaurant as the group but in a different part of the restaurant. Note: digital audio/video recording of the above conversation 4.9 19th June 2015 the group was in Cantagallo, Prato. We took a taxi to a hotel and upon arrival to the hotel the taxi driver unloaded the luggage to the side of the street. Prof. David White told me to transfer all the luggage to the hotel lobby. I picked up the luggage and took them to the hotel lobby area as requested. During the first two weeks of our trip, Prof. David White would ask me remove my water bottle from the table. I was not the only student that had a water bottle on the table in the restaurant, but I was singled out. I keep a water bottle with me because of my Sickle Cell disease (stay hydrated to prevent a sickle cell crisis). 5.0 For the remaining of the trip, I was given a meal allowance & I would eat at a different restaurant from the group. This cause a lot of anxiety. 5.1 26th June 2017 While in Pompii, Italy at a archelogy site I was holding my umbrella and Ipad, while photographing & note taking, a female student walked up behind me and pushed me. After, recovering from the push, I reported this incident to Prof. Alden Smith, in which he stated “what do you want me to do about this’, I can’t punch her for you”. I informed him that “I was not requesting him to punch her for me, but I was reporting my concerns for my safety.” 5.2 Arrived back in Waco on 4th July 2015. After, trying to compose myself and trying to get over the emotional ordeal I had encountered, I sent an email to the President Ken Starr outlining the negative and harsh experience that I had received in Italy. I received a response to my email from Provast Wesley Null stating that I don’t contact President Starr, but send all correspondence to him. 5.3 10th July 2015 I sent an email to Provast Wesley Null describing my horrible experience with Prof. Alden Smith and his unprofessional treatment toward me. I also mentioned the attack against me by one of the students. I also explained that I was physically ill. 5.4 23th July 2015 you sought law council from Attorney Jeffery Clark. 5.5 Month of August, 2015 You notified by Attorney Jeffery Clark, that Baylor was offering $5,000.00 5.6 16th June 17, sought assistance from Quanell X .
