EW caught up with “Power” creator Courtney A. Kemp to dish about the decision to kill off Ghost’s daughter, Raina (Donshea Hopkins).

“We wanted something that at this stage of the series would change everyone’s life forever,’ Kemp tells EW. The series is produced by rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and the Season 4 finale episode airs Sept. 3 on Starz.

“Power” follows James St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick), nicknamed “Ghost,” a major player in one of the city’s biggest illegal drug networks. His daughter’s death was a result of his son Tariq’s (Michael Rainey Jr.) rebellion into the world of drugs and crime.

Fans have expressed their grief of Raina’s death on social media. Even Charlamagne Da God gave Tariq “Donkey of the Day” honors.

In an interview with Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning show, Hopkins said she was also surprised by her character’s death.

“I feel like this season we became more attached to Raina because we got to see her grow and develop more especially this season,” she said. “And then, it was like that – I was like REALLY? C’mon?”

“I was definitely sad. I was a little heartbroken for a while. Not heartbroken, but it felt surreal,” she continued. “I was definitely not expecting it.”

Meanwhile, here’s what “Power” creator Courtney A. Kemp explained to EW about killing off her character:

“It had a lot to do with the inevitable, which was that Tariq was getting more and more over his head in dealing with a world he doesn’t understand,” she said. “What are the natural consequence of messing with gangsters? You get hurt. And in this case, Tariq has also been raised in a family where lying is how it goes — this is what they do.”

“What we also liked is this idea that Tariq has told his sister that he doesn’t want anyone to know, so she finds out and wants to tell mom, and he begs her, ‘Please, don’t tell anyone,’” she continues. “Well, she listens to him and it costs her life. And I think that is a really kind of beautiful way to tell that story. She loves her brother, her brother loves her, but at the end of the day, Tariq is possessed with the need to individuate from his parents and it blows up in his face. Unfortunately, she’s the one who gets hurt.”

“The show is not about power, it’s really about powerlessness,” Kemp added. “The idea that you don’t have power over what’s happening next no matter how much you think you do. So we wanted something that at this stage of the series would change everyone’s life forever.”

The “Power” season finale airs Sept. 3 at 9 p.m. ET on Starz.

        lol I know right.
I was so upset, but someone had spoiled it for me and I was so hoping they were joking. Oh well, now how is Tariq’s punk behind is going to handle this, I hope she haunts his dreams for the rest of his lifetime. Well maybe that’s a little dramatic, it’s just fiction lol. I wonder if this will draw her parents closer together or move them further apart, either way, I’m very sad about it.
