“An altercation occurred in which time Mr. Guillory was shot and pronounced dead at the scene,” Master Trooper Daniel (Scott) Moreau said, according to KATC. “The deputy received injuries as well and was transported to a local hospital.
It’s not clear what injuries the deputy received, but KATC reports that the officer has since been released from the hospital. The outlet also states that’s he’s been placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues. Guillory’s family and friends, including his sister, Keira, poured out their grief on social media.
Louisiana police have not released any details on what led up to the deputy shooting Guillory, but his girlfriend Dequince E. Brown was with him during the altercation.
During an interview with Pen Point News, Brown’s attorney, Joe Long, said the 21-year-old woman and Guillory were riding on Guillory’s ATV when they passed a deputy sitting in his unit.
Long said the deputy, Paul Holden LaFleur, started following Brown and Guillory so the couple pulled over.
According to the attorney, LaFleur asked Brown and Guillory for ID and when they told him they didn’t have any he reportedly got angry and ordered Guillory to come over to his car.
Long told the outlet Guillory and LaFleur got into a verbal argument, and things turned physical.
Brown, according to Long, was yelling for her boyfriend to stop and come back towards the ATV.
Guillory reportedly stopped fighting the deputy and turned and walked towards his girlfriend when LaFleur pulled his weapon and ordered them both to ground. They complied.
“They were both on the ground. Guillory was on the ground, on his belly, his hands behind his back, and the officer had a gun trained at Guillory’s back,” Long said. “They were still arguing back and forth but Guillory was on the ground as directed. … All of a sudden, a shot rang out and Brown knew Guillory had been shot.”
Long said Brown jumped on the officer’s back to “stop him from killing Guillory” and bit him on the neck.
“He shot Guillory three more times,” the attorney told the outlet.
Brown reportedly let go of the deputy, and LaFleur returned to his car. Long said during the altercation the deputy had dropped his police radio, so Brown grabbed it to call for help.
Two ambulances arrived to the scene. One took the injured deputy, the other left the scene empty, Long said, adding that his client never saw emergency personnel perform CPR on Guillory.
Long also said Guillory did not have a weapon on him when he was shot.
Brown is currently being held at the Evangeline Parish Jail on charges of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.
