Fatherhood is not always easy. Neither is fitness. The Fit Fathers Foundation wants to assist Black fathers with both. The Foundation, located in Silver Spring, Maryland,  invites dads to get out of the house for a few hours of fitness, health awareness and fun on Father’s Day.

The 3rd Annual “Fit Fathers Day” Celebration takes place June 19th, 2016 from 10am – 12pm at Veterans Plaza, 8525 Fenton Street, Silver Spring, MD. It’s a free event for the entire family that features workouts, fitness contests, live music and information to inspire lifestyle changes that encourage healthier communities, starting with the fathers and father figures that lead them.

If you can’t make it out to Silver Spring, this year, Fit Fathers has expanded to 11 other cities during Father’s Day weekend. Host cities of Fit Fathers Day include Apex, NC; Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Cincinnati, OH; Houston, TX; New York, NY; Oakland, CA; Philadelphia, PA; San Diego, CA; Seal Beach, CA; and Pemberton, NJ.

Baltimore Ravens’ star Kyle Arrington and Grammy-nominated singer Raheem DeVaughn are the 2016 Fit Fathers Day National Ambassadors. Both dads will be on hand to meet fans and work out at the DC, MD and VA area festival.

Fit Fathers Day is also bringing awareness to 13-year old Journey Butler and other families battling pediatric cancer. Journey was diagnosed with Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC), a rare and highly aggressive form of cancer affecting young Black patients that carry the sickle-cell trait.

The average survival rate is 12 months, but few patients survive more than two years  Fit Fathers will donate proceeds from its supporters of Fit Fathers Day to the Butler family as well as promote awareness through the hashtag #JourneyToHappiness.

If you can’t make those events or any in the 11 other cities, you can participate in other ways. The Fit Fathers Foundation asks the following commitment from fathers:

  • Take the Fit Fathers Day Pledge, which gives dads simple, specific steps to begin a healthier lifestyle. Dads are encouraged to post workout photos to be highlighted on FacebookInstagramTwitter and Flickr using hashtags #FitFathersDay #FitFathers and #JourneyToHappiness. We encourage all to take the pledge at FIT FATHERS DAY PLEDGE.
  • On June 19th, enjoy one hour of energetic activities with your family such as a 5K run, family bike ride, soccer, hiking, ball games, swimming or a simple walk through the park with nature.
  • Watch the Fit Fathers Day PSA, an inspiring video of dad spending time with his kids while showing them active sporting habits. The PSA also encourages parents to be more proactive and active with their kids.
  • After Fit Fathers Day, fathers can inspire their family with daily exercise and education to replace chips, cookies and soda with fruits, water and fresh juices and homemade smoothies. They can also cook more meals at home and avoid fast food.
