The GOP race for the White House has reached an all-time low: front-runner Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas are now making the campaign about their wives.

And it’s ugly.

“Donald, you’re a sniveling coward and leave Heidi the hell alone,” Cruz told reporters Thursday.

Trump and Cruz – through Twitter — are trading barbs about their wives. It all started with a Super PAC ad featuring Trump’s wife nude and then Trump threatening to “spill the beans” on Cruz’s wife.

It’s unclear what “beans” Trump is talking about, but the Super PAC ad, shows former model Melania Trump nude with a caption saying, “Meet Melania Trump. Your next first lady. Or, you could support Ted Cruz on Tuesday.”

Trump accused Cruz of approving the ad. Cruz denies it.

Sound personal? Yes, it is.

But it’s also ridiculous. Neither Trump or Cruz are acting presidential and neither candidate can claim the moral high ground.

When did wives become fair game during presidential campaigns? And when did it become business as usual to go after the wives of candidates?

This Republican campaign is a complete mess. Serious issues have taken a back seat to a feud about wives. Even GOP voters should be angered and outraged.

While we’re listening to these clowns defending their wives over nonsense, when is the last time Trump or Cruz spent any significant time talking about poverty in America?

There are nearly 47 million people living in poverty – and 15 million are children. African-Americans lead the poverty rate with 26 percent, Hispanics  make up 23.6 percent,  for Asians, 12 percent and for non-Hispanic whites 10.1 percent.

Poverty is an issue that has been largely ignored by the GOP candidates on the campaign trail and by Trump and Cruz in particular.

Meanwhile, the much-discussed ad was created by Make America Awesome, the work of GOP strategist Liz Mair, who took credit for the ad. She said Cruz had nothing to do with it.

Cruz took to  Twitter in response.

“Pic of your wife not from us,” the U.S. senator from Texas said. “Donald, if you try to attack Heidi, you’re more of a coward than I thought. #classless.”

Later, Cruz appeared on CNN. “He went directly after my wife. If Donald wants to get in a character fight, he’s better off sticking with me because Heidi is way out of his league.”

So when does it end? Tomorrow? Next week? And should Cruz or Trump sit in the White House when they engage in such crude behavior?

Frankly, neither candidate is fit for higher office and, sadly, this is the best of the GOP pack. Stop the shameful schoolyard bickering and leave the wives out of it.

What a shame.

Why is this off limits now? No one had a problem when they were talking about President Obama and his family! They dogged his wife and children! Posted derogatory pictures of them, called them disgusting names, made jokes. It wasn’t off limits then so why is it off limits now! And no one in any media said a word, nor are they making the comparison now! Why is that? Just asking, somebody has to!

  2. where was this outrage when they were dragging Michelle through the mud?? Ohhhh yea let’s not bring up the past…white privilege at it’s best!
