HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The jury at a Pennsylvania police officer’s murder trial has watched a video that shows her shocking a fleeing suspect with a stun gun, then shooting him twice in the back as he lay face down in the snow.
Officer Lisa Mearkle went on trial Tuesday in the fatal shooting of 59-year-old David Kassick after he fled from a Feb. 2 traffic stop in Hummelstown, a Harrisburg suburb. The shooting was captured by a camera attached to the officer’s stun gun.
A lawyer for the 15-year veteran told jurors she fired because he would not show her his hands and she thought he was reaching into his jacket for a gun.
Prosecutors say she took Kassick’s life unnecessarily.
