Jacque Reid talks about a new movement to end the stigma surrounding women and their choice to have an abortion. Reproductive activist Renee Bracey Sherman talks about the #ShoutYourAbortion campaign, which is aimed to help remove the stigma and shame around a woman’s decision to terminate her pregnancy without shame.

“When I was 19 I got pregnant and I knew I wasn’t ready to be a parent. I knew I didn’t want to be pregnant. While we may have a lot of feelings about abortions, we often don’t feel the regret because we know it was the best situation for us and our situation,” Sherman said.

Why she decided to share her story:

“I kind of talked about it here and there with the people in my life. But when I first told my family, they were so supportive. Four years ago I started to write my story. 1 in 3 women will have an abortion by the time their 45. I knew I wasn’t alone. ”

How does stigma and shame hurt black women:

“There’s a lot of negative stereotypes for black women’s sexuality. We’re basically damned if we do, damned if we don’t.  That plays a part in what to do with your pregnancy…”
