Blindsided by the furor his comments provoked on the Right and Left, neurosurgeon Ben Carson apologized Wednesday for saying that homosexuality is a choice.

The possible 2016 Republican presidential candidate issued the apology in a Facebook post. He wrote that his word choice “does not reflect fully my heart on gay issues. I do not pretend to know how every individual came to their sexual orientation.”

NBC News reports:

The about-face come hours after he appeared on CNN, where, when asked if being gay was a choice, Carson said: “Absolutely.”

He explained, “Because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight — and when they come out, they’re gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.”

Carson’s remarks came shortly after he formed a committee to explore a 2016 presidential bid for the Republican nomination. The former neurosurgeon issued an apology later Wednesday on Facebook, though he noted that “up until this point there have been no definitive studies that people are born into a specific sexuality.”

Is Ben Carson sincere, or was the statement just a bumbling way to get back on everyone’s radar screen as he gears up for a potential presidential bid in 2016?

You are both Spot On!! Right Wing folks seem to always find a few colored folks that will allow them to remain comfortable in their racism.

Dr. Carson is considered a highly intelligent human being by his peers. With that being said not one person knows something, or anything about EVERYTHING. Yes this is his opinion but it’s sounds a little ludacris. It’s true that when a person goes to prison they may experience being raped by the same gender but that doesn’t always mean you “turn gay”, it’s more about surviving. And…not everyone that says they’re gay have gone to prison. So that statement Carlson made, although could be an argument is just not a good argument about how everyone or most people “become” gay. No one really knows, not even the “smartest” of scientist, they don’t always get everything right.

This commentary concerning homosexuality is less about the cause of homosexuality and more about Carson trying to find a way to stay in the extreme right wings good graces

Dr. Carson has his opinion and it is just as valid as anyone else. The medical community does not know why or what causes homosexuality. He just messed up by not giving a politically correct answer. Nowadays people experiment with all types of sexual behavior and many homosexuals were abused which caused them to turn from the gender that abused them. All ideas are valid because there is no consensus either in the medical or psychological community.
“There is no consensus among scientists about the exact reasons that an individual develops a heterosexual, bisexual, gay or lesbian orientation. Although much research has examined the possible genetic, hormonal, developmental, social and cultural influences on sexual orientation, no findings have emerged that permit scientists to conclude that sexual orientation is determined by any particular factor or factors. Many think that nature and nurture both play complex roles; most people experience little or no sense of choice about their sexual orientation.” –http://www.apa.org/topics/lgbt/orientation.aspx
