Atlanta’s Dunbar Learning Complex is part of an educational initiative that emphasizes the “two-generation” approach – helping both children and parents to generate the best outcome for families. The Complex works hand-in-hand with The Center For Working Families which emphasizes job and literacy training for parents and families. In order to enroll your child at DLC, you must be enrolled at The Center. And there is a waiting list, as the comprehensive approach to learning has made for many success stories.

According to reports, grade-level reading scores improved dramatically after Dunbar Learning Center’s first year. Working parents, who are sometimes themselves struggling, are grateful for the support of the comprehensive school, which has a pre-school day that runs from 6:30 a.m to 6:30 p.m

“To promote positive outcomes for the entire family, the Dunbar Learning Center is using a two-generation approach that meets three distinct objectives. First, the complex delivers supports and services that intentionally address the needs of the children and their parents at the same time,” reads the Dunbar Learning Center website. “Second, if offers programming to develop parent and caregiver skills and resources that influence healthy child development, as well as the skills adults need to advance their economic success. And finally, it has established partnerships with organizations that promote family economic stability and success.”

Education is America’s greatest asset and by making it a family affair, Dunbar Learning Center and its support organizations are an inspiring look at how education can work to create change not just in a child, but in a community.
