The year 2014 was an amazing one. This past year was full of stories that have touched our hearts, angered many in our community and forced many of us into action. As we close 2014 and look forward to the promise of a new year, we take a look at the some of the biggest stories of the year in this edition of the NewsOne Rundown.

Worldwide Ebola Outbreak 

The first wave of Ebola deaths, early in 2014, attracted little notice. By March, the World Health Organization was monitoring the outbreak. By midsummer, it was the worst Ebola epidemic on record, with a death toll now approaching 7,000, mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. A Liberian man with the disease died at a Dallas hospital, followed by a few other cases involving U.S. health workers, sparking worries about the readiness of the U.S. health system. READ MORE

Ferguson Grand Jury Failing To Indict Officer Darren Wilson In The Shooting Death Of Mike Brown Sparks Protests

Some witnesses said 18-year-old Michael Brown had his hands up in surrender; others said he was making a charge. But there was no dispute he was unarmed and shot dead by a White police officer in Ferguson. A St. Louis grand jury’s decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson for the murder of Brown sparked protests across the country where participants chanted “hands up don’t shoot.” READ MORE

Nationwide #BlackLivesMatter Protests A Result Of Staten Island Grand Jury’s Decision To Not Indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo In The Chokehold Death Of Eric Garner

In New York City, another unarmed Black man, Eric Garner, was killed after a white officer put him in a chokehold during an arrest for unauthorized cigarette sales. Even though the incident was caught on video, a Staten Island grand jury opted not to indict NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo for the chokehold death of 43-year-old garner sparking #BlackLivesMatters protests across the nation and the world. READ MORE

More Than Two Dozen Women Allege Bill Cosby Sexually Assaulted Them

For years, Bill Cosby had been called “America’s Dad,” widely respected by many people across the country for his comedy and philanthropy. In the last few months, he has fallen from grace following the dozens of sexual assault allegations that have tarnished his reputation and have him fighting for his legacy. 

Cosby’s attempt at a career comeback collapsed as abuse allegations resurfaced. Netflix postponed a comedy special it had planned with Cosby, while NBC stopped development of a sitcom with him and TV Land pulled reruns of “The Cosby Show.” At the present date more than two dozen women have gone public accusing Cosby of sexual assault. READ MORE

Donald Sterling Ousted As NBA Owner After Racially Charged Comments Surfaced

On April 25th, recordings emerged and quickly spread of Los Angeles Clippers team owner Donald Sterling denouncing his young girlfriend for bringing black men to Clippers games. Days later, Sterling received a lifetime ban and $2.5 million fine from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who called the remarks hateful and deeply offensive.

Sterling’s wife, Shelly Sterling reached an agreement to sell the team for $2 billion to ex-Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and on Tuesday, August 12th, the NBA announced the sale of the Clippers to Ballmer was completed. READ MORE
