NYC Viral Subway Brawl

Charges have been dropped against Jorge Pena who can be seen smacking “the soul out of a woman,” Danay Howard, in a viral video of a New York City subway brawl, according to the New York Post.

The incident began to unfold about 5 a.m. Saturday on the F-train in the city’s Greenwich Village community when a woman began taunting Pena about his leather jacket.

“You got a bum [a**] 8-ball jacket that came out in 1990,” the woman can be heard saying. “Just get your money up, simple.”

The altercation then turned physical after the woman struck the man in the head. Pena then slapped the so-called “soul out of the woman,” prompting others to jump in, sparking an all-out rumble. The fight sent other passengers ducking and diving for cover, while others tried to intervene.

Police arrested Howard, 21, and Pena at the W. 4th St. subway station along with Kevin Gil, 21, and Shanique Campbell, 20, the New York Daily News reports. Gil and Campbell were apparently supporting Howard and jumped in to the altercation after the slap.

Pena, Gil, and Campbell were all charged with misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct, while Howard was charged with felony assault for using a shoe as a weapon in the assault. Charges were dropped against Pena.

The brawl, called “Man Smacks the Soul Out of Girl on the NY Subway,” quickly went viral after it was uploaded to YouTube on Saturday, capturing more than 3.8 million views by Wednesday afternoon.

A New York Police Department source said that all of the charges against Pena have been dismissed, calling it a case of self-defense.
