The WestView News, a New York based community newspaper, is under fire for running an op-ed piece that refers to President Obama with the n-word in its headline.

The article, written by James Lincoln Collier, actually took a pro-Obama stance and focused on criticizing what it deemed to be the “racism” he’s had to deal with from Republican voters since he has taken office in 2008.

However, that didn’t stop some residents in the West Village from feeling disturbed by the headline, according to the New York Post.

“It’s disrespectful in any context to refer to the president of the United States as the N-word,” Eugene May, a West Village resident told the Post. “If you were quoting something or referring to the historic context of the word being used, I can understand the justification.”

The monthly newspaper’s editor, George Capsis, said he agreed to run the headline because the New York Times “avoids using the word” and the author wanted to “shock us into accepting that there are people who believe and use this outrageous word.”

With the backlash they’re experiencing, hopefully they learned why The New York Times doesn’t use it, and why their objective for using the term was a poor one to begin with. Yes, racism still exists. However, blatantly using the most racist term of them all doesn’t really help change those attitudes and mentalities.
