What happens when you’re a waitress who’s tipped $1,000 for your service?

Well if you work at the Waffle House your job may take it from you.

That’s the story of Shaina Brown, an employee of the popular late night diner.

Around 3am on Mother’s Day Brown received a $1500 tip from her customer. The only request? Give another patron the $500 and she would keep the remaing $1,000 for herself.

She would soon find out that according to Waffle House policies, a tip of that amount was forbidden, and she would not be allowed to keep the money — her money.

The company issued a statement on its Facebook page after the story of Brown’s reached a  nationwide audience.

Charlotte Observer reports:

“This has given us cause to review our procedures so we can get tips to our associates quicker in these unusual situation.,” said the Waffle House post. “It says a lot about this customer that he was willing to tip our associate this generous amount. Our intentions were for the associate to get her tip all along. We are sorry that our associate and the customer are having to go through this.”

A Waffle House spokesman said the policy is intended to protect the restaurant in case generous tippers change their minds and having credit card companies retrieve the money.

Brown later received a check for $1,000 from the customer.

  1. Race Baiters, read the company policy. The policy is in place to protect Waffle House from drunk patrons giving huge tips like this under the influence and then having second thoughts the next morning and sending their credit card company after Waffle House. That would likely incur legal costs to the company. The policy does not state that only blacks receiving tips of large amounts must turn them over, ALL employees must abide by the policy. The policy was no doubt given to all employees at time of hiring, should they choose to read it. STOP this shigiddy victim mentality, and all races will beefing to treat us with respect.

  2. I am so glad to see our people putting these POS companies on Blast when an injustice has been done. Yes I agree she was black and that was one on the reason they denied it to her. They thought she was stupid enough to fall for their crap. I stop going to all Waffle houses year ago and never will again.

Yes, Waffle House made the waitress give back the 1K tip because she is Black!—

Now that they have been found out–they are apologizing!!!!! —

If I was that waitress, I would now tell Waffle House what they can do with their job!!!!!
