In 1995, comedian Mike Epps was just starting his career, performing on Showtime At The Apollo. He said he was nervous as hell, but he knew he had no choice but to kill it.
“I had to make it happen. I promised my mother a washer and dryer,” he says. While we’re sure he’s upgraded since then, at that point, he was the proud owner of a Buick. “I was driving a red Regal with bubble gum stuck on the seats. Every girl who got out of that car had a sticky booty,” says Epps.
As co-host of this morning’s Tom Joyner Morning Show, Epps took time out of his schedule to hang out with the crew sharing his thoughts on everything from basketball to teenage dating. But he’s on the After Dark tour around the country these days where you can get his standup show in full. He says he realizes after years of being a comedian that he plays mostly to the ladies.
“That’s one thing about being a comic. When you go out on stage you got to realize that the ladies is buying the tickets. The guys are just coming to the show because the ladies are buying tickets. I stand on stage and the girls be laughing and the dudes just be staring at ‘em like what are you laughing at?”
After years of playing funny roles, Epps has recently played grittier, more serious projects. He is currently headlining the Mike Epps After Dark Tour and will join the cast of BET’s “Being Mary Jane” and “Survivor’s Remorse”, a new Starz sitcom executive produced by NBA star LeBron James.
