PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) — President Barack Obama says news that private employers created just 96,000 jobs last month is "not good enough" and the economy needs to churn out jobs faster.

Obama commented Friday while campaigning in New Hampshire came as the government said unemployment fell to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent in July, largely because more people stopped looking for work.

It was the president's first campaign appearance after his speech Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention.

Obama says it's "a long tough journey" to recover from the recession. He says Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and his running mate have not offered specifics on how they would improve the economy because "they know their plan won't sell."

Romney says the report shows Obama's policies are not working.
