NEW YORK (AP) — ESPN has suspended outspoken sportscaster Stephen A. Smith for a week because of his comments about domestic abuse suggesting women should make sure that they don’t do anything to provoke an attack.

Smith’s commentary occurred during a discussion on ESPN2’s “First Take” last Friday about the NFL’s two-game suspension of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice following charges he assaulted his now-wife. The remarks attracted widespread attention, including a stinging rebuke online from a fellow ESPN personality.

Smith issued an on-air apology Monday, saying it was the most egregious mistake of his career.

A day later, ESPN took action. The network’s chief executive, John Skipper, told ESPN’s staff in a memo it was done after a “thoughtful discussion” about appropriate actions with men and women in his company.

“I believe his apology was sincere and that he and we have learned from what we’ve collectively experienced,” Skipper said.

Smith will not appear on “First Take” or ESPN radio until Aug. 6, the network said. Smith recently signed a deal with Sirius XM for a satellite radio show.

  1. Stephen A. gets suspended for a week, and Ray Rice, gets suspended for only two games for knocking his then girlfriend out cold, this is absolutely ridiculous. Stephen A. who don’t have so much as a traffic ticket had been made the villain, while Ray Rice gets off scot free. What does suspended Stephen A. accomplish, women are still getting the crap beat out of them, women are still refusing to press charges against their abusers, women are still repeatedly going back to these violent men, people are so screwed up in the head.

  2. THE FACT IS WOMEN DO PROVOK & THERE WILL ALWAYS BE MEN WHO WILL HIT THEM BACK PONT BLANK WITH ALL THESE CASES SHOWING CLEARLY PUTTING THEIR HANDS ON MEN AS IF MEN DON’T FEEL PAIN. I DON’T PUT MY HANDS ON WOMEN AND I DON’T WANT WOMEN PUTTING THEIR HANDS ON ME!! UNDER ANY CIRCUSTANCES, I GIVE RESPECT & I EXPECT RESPECT. BUT IF ONE HITS ME I WILL HIT BACK MAN OR WOMAN. FUCK THAT.

Look..bottom line..This is a woman’s world. There are ways to restrain a woman without hitting her. As strong as he is..He should have been able to restrain her. Unless it’s life or death..and she has a weapon..no reason for him to hit her.

White people think ELVIS PRESLEY is a GOD and they still support him. Matter of fact they worship ELVIS. He dated and wanted a14, 15 year old. In addition. Jerry Lee Lewis also dated young girls 14, 15.

  4. It only makes sense that if you have the potential to get abused you really should be sensitive to the fact that you, at any moment, can get your ass beat the fuck up or worse.

Smith, kept it too real… he lost his focus. He knows or should have known that they were waiting on him to slip. He slipped and they gripped. Now he’s the sacrifice, huh?

  5. If you spit on someone, you are suppose to get the hell knocked out of you. Keep that mess to yourself. That is not the way to effectively communicate with someone.

Where was all of this outrage when Solange hit and kicked Jay Z? People on tv made jokes about Jay Z and even did a bit on SLN. Was anyone suspended for making a mockery out of Jay Z situation? NO. Give a break. This is why this debate will never be solve because it is too much bias and hypocritical beliefs, etc that goes along with this argument.

Everyone should keep their hands to themselves. It is a simple as that and Ms. Whoopi said it right. What is the problem? Stop making excuses for people in this case some women. Some women can be violent just like man (especially these women of today). if a man is hit by a woman, many people will laugh. If he calls the cop, he will be called a PUNK. The last time I check, there are women in prison who Killed and abused men so why make excuses that a woman should not be hit for no reason. Oh yes, there are some reason to hit someone if you are defending yourself. And if anyone is trying to say anything pass this, you will lose the debate because many folks do NOT want to hear it. No one should hit NO ONE unless they are defending themselves and man can defend himself against a woman. End of story.

It never fails. Stevens’ comment were misconstrued. To suggest he advocates against women violence is nonsense

    • Tammy on said:

Women Violence and defending yourself is TWO different things. But as usually, some folks want overlook what is really said so they can get mad and argue about much of nothing.

  9. What would you people do if someone walked up to you and spit in your faces. That is the ultimate insult and disrespect. I’m pretty sure I would have reacted in the same manner. By the way women are always crying about equal treatment; how about equal ass whippings as well. You cannot open a can of worms like that and not expect them to crawl on you.

    • Tammy on said:

I agree Greg. Do not start a war that you can not finish. If you know you are weaker than a man, then you DO not start mess with a man and hit him first. This is just logic. Again, we are NOT taking about men who just beat and hit women we are talking about men who do the right things but have women who will hit them out of the blue.

Everyone needs to keep their hands to themselves however i was offended by his remarks he is one of these people who has a forum a platform and they think they can say whatever they want his insinuation that she was responsible (she did not hit him she spat on him which is really an assault) and his reaction was to knock her out cold I don’t think so and for Stephen Smith to say basically
women need not to “make men mad” was insulting and offensive. I am not saying what she did was OK but what he did was also the WRONG reaction and his 2 game suspension was the wrong message from the NFL to women who have been the victims of DV many who have been killed by their abuser. I worked in DV court for many years and the things I saw done to women turned my stomach and sometime the men were victims like I said everyone needs to keep their hands to themselves

Stephen will stop putting his foot in mouth when blacks stop using the N word. Personally, I do not see where Stephen did anything wrong in this case.

Praise GOD, for shutting this slave up! Now, ABCshould shut Whoopi down, too! Both of these slaves should zip it up indefinitely!

    • Praise God? You need to stop it. He said nothing wrong. Sorry if you don’t have any common sense to understand. And Whoopi spoke the truth as well. Women dont need to hit men as well as men don’t need to hit women. Stop the violence.

    • Tammy on said:

Why? He is suspended one week WITH PAY. And in my view, he was telling the truth. Where is people common sense to know what the man was saying? And if any nutcase took Stephen words to mean to beat on women, that nutcase person just want to do what he was going to do in the first place REGARDLESS what Stephen said or not. Stephen should NOT be shut up just because YOU do not like what he said. Some women WILL PROVOKE a man (this is NOT the men who just hit women. We are talking about women who will get up in a man face to push his face, hit him because he does not do what she say, etc). ALL people should keep their hands to themselves and I will NOT make an excuse for some women because I know some of us can be h*ll.
