Dang, here’s an NBA first. And it’s not a good one.

We can only wonder what Los Angeles Lakers legends Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Kobe Bryant are thinking, along with Boston Celtics greats Bill Russell, John Havlicek, Larry Bird and Robert Parrish. Or what about the New York Knicks’ Willis Reed, Earl Munroe, Walt Frazier, Patrick Ewing and Bill Bradley?

What are we wondering about, you ask?

How all those exalted NBA legends feel about the fact that their teams, The Los Angeles Lakers, the Boston Celtics and the New York Knicks … 3 teams with a combined 35 NBA titles … are going to MISS the playoffs this year.

That’s never happened before. For the first time, the NBA will hold a postseason without those three teams.

“It’s horrible for the NBA that those markets may not be in the playoffs,” Lakers radio commentator Mychal Thompson told USA Today. “The NBA is a lot healthier business when those franchises are competing for championships.” Unfortunately, fans of other teams most likely could care less. These franchises have been around since the 1940s.

The Celtics have won 17 NBA championships and the Lakers 16. Though the Knicks have won just two titles, they have gone to the playoffs 42 times. The Lakers and Celtics have met in the NBA Finals 12 times and staged some of the most intensely fought championship series the league has ever seen.

Bottom line … instead of playing games next month, the three franchises will be looking forward to May 20, the day of the NBA’s draft lottery.
